Homman Tim Reeses blowing both alto and soprano saxophones at the same time on the haunting "Portuguese Lover comes immediately to mind. There are very few musicians in the world that do that, the late great Rahsaan Roland Kirk being one. Then there was saxophonist Dennis DePlassio scatting the daylights out of "Bebop Buffet." A veritable smorgasbord of jazz delights, Bebop Buffet paid homage to bebop legends Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Harold Bush and Dizzy Gillespie. It was truly a But the one song that stands above all others has to be Maynards own Ganeesha, an Indian spiritual that mixed Eastern seriousness with Western panache. The song began softly with Maynard playing his Firebird instrument, a specially-designe- d slide valve trumpet With he and the band chanting Om the hall literally vibrated. The song kept building until the trombones, trumpets and saxophones combined with the booming drums, powerful bass and tinkling piano into a crescendo that shook the rafters. Interview In a interview Maynard said the youngsters of today are much hipper when it comes to music. Its really OK now to love Chicago, my band and Elvis, he noted. He said he loves to teach in schools across the country. I love music, I love to teach and I love to play, terrible showoff that I am. I love to bring joy to young people, Maynard said. As much as he inspires young musicians, Maynard said young musicians inspire him just as much. They have to be great before they can get into my band, but I am very inspired by them, he added. lumbia EMI-Americ- a. high notes.
