Show Sunday March 20, 1983 P29 Know the Nevada? real li The odds are against it G ' by Mitchell Landsberg Associated Press Writer , With the possible RENO, Nev. exception of New Jersey, Nevada may be the most maligned state in the nation. dismiss the Most state as a barren wasteland given over to organized crime and strip-joidebauchery. Tourists see bells, and not cherries and dollar signs much else. In fact, Nevada may have an even worse reputation than New Jersey. People at least joke about New Jersey. No one jokes about Nevada except comedians in casino lounges. But consider some of the myths which make up the common perception of Nevada. Theyre not really in fact theyre mostly wrong right. But they dont really tel! the whole story. There is nothing in Myth No. 1 Nevada outside of Reno and Las Vegas. Correct. But what most people dont realize is just how much nothing there is. Nevada is the seventh largest state in the United States, taking up about as much space as New Jersey, New York, New Hamp- ing towns, ranching towns, historic old clapboard-sidewal- k towns, well photographed ghost towns. People are attracted to Nevada by the nothingness, only they call it peace and quiet. Nevada is a barren Myth No. 2 desert. Absolutely right. Nevada actually gets less precipitation, on the average, than any other state in the country. But a lot of that precipitation is in the form of snow, something most outsiders dont realize. Northern Nevada is high desert, with mountains climbing 10,000 feet or more above sea level. Renos winter climate is actually the a bit colder than New Yorks average nighttime temperature in 19 dey December is a 50 to at below fell once It grees. 5,200-foSan Jacinto, a Union Pacific railroad stop in the northeastern corner of the state. Some of the best skiing in the country can be found at Lake Tahoe, half of which is in Nevada. Even gamblers in Las d Vegas can see peaks for half the year. That brings us to Myth No. 3 Reno is a suburb of Las Vegas or, at least, somewhere in the same gener nt shire, Maine and combined. sub-balm- ot snow-cappe- Maryland Furthermore, theres actually min something in all that nothing al vicinity. People in the East, especially, seem to regard Nevadas two major cities as neighbors. But Reno is as close to Las Vegas as New York is to Toronto, or Chicago to Nashville about 450 miles. And a visitor could keep driving for 200 miles north of Reno and still be in Nevada. The two cities have entirely difd ferent climates. And theres a cross-stat- e rivalry like that between San Francisco and Los Angeles. People in Reno think people in Las Vegas are crass and slightly addled. Las Vegans think Renoites are hicks. NevaThen theres Myth No. 4 da residents are all gamblers, criminals or both. Actually, some people from out of state insist the opposite is true that people from Nevada never gamble. The truth lies somewhere between. Lots of Nevadans gamble, some compulsively, others rarely, some guests visit. only when Naturally, many Nevadans work in casinos. There also are plenty of criminals. The states infamous Black Book of people barred from casinos is filled with their names. deep-seate- The Standard of Luxury & Quality AVAILABLE in 29', 33' and 35' gas engine and 37' diesel models.
