Show ,Th Salt Lake Tribune, Friday, November 26, Tis the season for new By Terry Orme Tribune Staff Writer First it was the best of times movies like E.T.," An Officer and a Gentleman" and "Rocky III" made last summer the most lucrative in box office history. Then came the worst of times a fall season when it was all but impossible to keep track of what was playing as exhibitors jockeyed their schedules trying to unload the bombs and find worthwhile replacements. Among the films that died quick deaths in Salt Lake City were Bette Midlers Jinxed," Luciano Pavarotti's "Inchon" and Paul Yes, Giorgio," the which has Mazurskys Tempest. Monsignor, managed to stay in town, has to be one of the big disappointments of a lackluster season, with its fine cast saddled with a melodramatic, implausible screenplay. A Creepshow, has its moments, of a but it too is a letdown from what you would-expec- t g collaboration between author Stephen King and cult film director George Romero. With the exceptions of The Chosen, My Favorite Year and, for Sylvester Stallone fans, First Blood, there havent been many good reasons to go to the movies unless it was to see E.T. a third time. With Christmas four weeks away, the celluloid drought is about to end. Like the summer months, Christmastime is when Hollywood brings out its big guns, for these seasons are when more people go to more movies. In an industry which produces as much rumor and speculation as it does film, already there is talk of all Oscar nominations and big box office winners surrounding movies which very few people have even seen. Paul Newman, playing a disillusioned, ambulance-chasing Boston attorney in The Verdict," and Dustin Hoffman as an actor who dresses up as a woman in order to get work in Tootsie, have been mentioned as probable Oscar nominees. James Mason as the attorney against whom Newmans character matches wits, has been predicted by one purveyor of gossip as a shoe-i- n for a best supporting actor nomination. Like the television networks at election time, those who chronicle the motion picture industry are big on making projections. Among the projected winners at the box office are Tootsie," The Verdict and Jim Hensons fantasy film The Dark Crystal. Expectations are high for The Toy," a comedy starring Jackie Gleason and Richard Pryor. Gandhi," Richard Attenborough's epic of Indias spiritual leader is one of the eagerly awaited films of the season. However it won't reach Salt Lake City until late January. Also arriving late in Salt Lake City will be Sophies Choice, with. Meryl Streep in the title role, and Frances," Mel Brooks tragic film biography of movie star Frances Farmer. All the talk about what will be good, and what will be for the dogs, is just so much hot air at this point. The only thing that will matter is how you, the movie goer, responds with your pocketbook.
