I wrote back to Dave and told him Id like to come back and play at Weber rather than BYU, remembers Mendenhall. I had heard Weber had a whole new coaching staff and that they were winning. I figured BYU wouldve been about seven deep at linebacker, so I thought going to Weber was the best decision. I couldve returned to BYU, but I dont know if I wouldve had a scholarship. I probably wouldve had to work my way back up and earn one. a strong, curly-haire- d Mendenhall, young man of 23 years, didnt return to Utah from New Zealand until June of this year. He had done some weightlifting while away, but his speed, quickness and conditioning were lacking. I was able to lift a lot in New Zealand, but I hadnt done much running or stretching," noted Mendenhall. I did a lot of endurance drills in the summer to get my wind back, but its taken some time. Im playing better every week now and my speed is almost back to where it was when I left. Mendenhall, who registered 3 tackles in Webers overtime triumph against 46-4- 15 triple Nevada- - Reno last week, moved into defensive prominence this season when Mike Nichter was injured and knocked out for the season against Utah State Sept. 18. Mendenhall began sharing time at linebacker with Kevin Lapa, but Wildcat Coach Mike Price elevated Marty to the starting position after the Portland State game three weeks ago. Mendenhall has started every game since, and Weber has won two of the three and now has a chance for a winning season. in Kevin (Lapa) and I are good friends, and we dont mind splitting time at linebacker, said Mendenhall. Splitting time keeps us both fresh. Coach (Claude) Toma-sin- i (Webers defensive line coach) was in the film room with Kevin and I watching films and he wanted to know how we could be such good friends when were competing against each other. I told him thats just the way it is.
