The majority of those players competing in Syracuse, N.Y. this week will move to Buffalo, N.Y. for a special senior Pro-AMonday. Thus, Tuesday will be the only day many of the seniors will be able to play a practice round at Jeremy Ranch. . . . Springvilles Billy Casper was forced to withdraw from the Senior Tours Champions of Golf in Denver last week with a sore back. Billy also pulled out of the Syracuse event in hopes of being in top form for the Shootout at Jeremy Ranch, of which he and Arnold Palmer are serving as . . . Lionel, who enjoyed two fewer Tour victories than his older brother (five), turned professional in 1950 at Jays urging. Youre well acquainted with Utah resident Billy Casper. And youve undoubtedly heard the virtues of Gene Littler, Miller Barber and Don January extolled. But when 50 of golfs golden greats assemble for the PGA Senior Tours inaugural Shootout at Jeremy Ranch next Wednesday through Saturday, will you recognize Louisiana brothers Jay and Lionel Hebert? The names may not ring a bell, but perhaps you should observe the only sibling act to win the prestigious PGA Championship. I can only remember two sets of brothers who really had much of an impact on the PGA Tour, recalls Arnold Palmer, who designed the Jeremy Ranch course on which the seniors will be competing next week. There were the Mangrums (Lloyd and Ray) and the Heberts. I think the Mangrums may have won a few more tournaments, but the Hebert brothers were the only brothers to both win the same major championship, if my memory serves me correctly. Amies recollections are correct. Brothers Lloyd and Ray Mangrum took home 15 Tour victories, while the Hebert brothers Jay and Lionel combined for 12 Tour triumphs between 1957 and 1966. The Hebert brothers left their mark on golf and theyve been a valuable addition to the Senior Tour, said Brian Henning, the PGA Senior Tour administrator who is in Syracuse, N.Y., this week overseeing the final stop on the seniors circuit before Jeremy Ranch. Jay didnt play in any senior events last year, but Lionel did pretty well. He finished 22nd in senior earnings last year. Indeed, the younger Lionel banked $14,286 in official senior earnings last year, with his best finish being an eighth place tie in the U.S. Senior Open. Jay, who is five years older than Lionel, declined to compete on the Senior Tour last year, but has become a regular on the senior circuit this season. Although five years younger than his brother, Lionel won the PGA Championship in 1957. Not to be outdone, Jay ruled the PGA in 1960. And the brothers major victories were vastly different.
