Show 8 B The Salt Lake Tribune, Saturday, April 17, 1982 Sears Panelists Study Ethical Problems Facing Newsmen, Legal Area Local newsmen, lawmen, judges and attorneys were put on trial Friday for such unseemly conduct as threatening unwitting victimes into confessing vice, leaking grand jury secrets in a cocktail lounge, using the influence of the bench to cover up illegal sex, drug and extortion schemes, and violating judicial orders when disagreeing with the court's interpretation of the law It was all hypothetical, of course A panel of 14 participants representing local newspapers, television stations, the judiciary, law enforcement, and members of the bar tackled tough ethical questions facing the media and legal community during the third annual Conference at the Marriott Hotel. The conference was sponsored by The Salt I,ake Tribune, the Deseret News, the Ogden Standard F.xaminer, the Logan Herald Journal, the Daily Herald of Provo, Spectrum Newspapers, Inc , the Utah Press Association, the Utah State Bar and Salt Lake County Bar associations, KTVX News, Channel 4, KSL-TNews, Channel 5, and KUTV News, Channel 2. Panelists included Ernest J Ford, managing Bill Lord, director, KUTV's editor, KSL-TEXTRA; Wendell Ashton, publisher of the Deseret News, Malm Foster, managing editor of the Logan-HeralJournal, Joe Bauman, reporter for the Deseret News; Con Psarras, reporter for The Tribune; Milton Hollstein, professor of journalism. University of Utah, Vem Anderson, news editor for the Associated Press; Randy L. Dryer, lawyer specializing in media law; Boyd Bunnell, judge, 7th Judicial District, D. Gilbert Athay, defense lawyer, Nicholas Morgan, of the Salt Lake County Sheriffs Office; David Winder, U.S District Court judge; Noall T. Wootton, Utah County Attorney, and Dallin Oaks, Utah Supreme Court justice. Two Hypothetical Questions Panelists were queried on two hypothetical questions dealing primarily with reporting and leaking information on grand jury investigations, and what constitutes information the public has a right to know. Secondary ethical and legal ramifications of various legal and reporting techniques were also explored. Since the reporting of Watergate there has been a proliferation of news stories relying on unnamed sources. Is an unnamed source an integral part of the reporting system7 The panelists felt that whenever possible the source should be revealed Many felt that if a source would not be named, the story' could be obtained using other avenues. Aceording to Mr. Hollstein. confidential sources d NEED FENCE? The Me .hod Is Important of The melhod of obtaining the story is also important Should the media pay for news stories or obtain them through questionable means7 When you pay for a story, that dory becomes tainted, said Mr Psarras The person selling the information could try to increase the value of his product by embellishing the truth, panel members said Hidden cameras and various forms of deceit in obtaining the news has popped up during the past years in news stories Those hidden cameras, according to Mr Hollstein. should never be employed "I think it is a sneaky, ulterior way to get the story " Mr Ford, whose telev lsion station has used hidden cameras, compared the technique to a rejiorter going out on a street and not identifying himseli He said he has no qualms about such using such methods. The right of the public to know is a vital asjiect of reporting.
