Show 10 CEMENT at a meeting of the board of governors of 0 the commercial club some nights ago the matter of the cement sidewalks was considered at length and the action ot of the contractors in purchasing salt lake cement in preference to our local article WIS was much deplored just why the foreign brand was used by the contractors was not entirely understood by the board of 0 governors but the unanimous sentiment was that every means should be used to induce the contractors to use our own cement on the balance of the job to be completed in the spring the situation of a community having cement sidewalks laid with cement manufactured afar oft when we have a superior article manufactured at our very doors is rather unusual and altogether displeasing to the majority of the people of the community and the action of the board of governors in passing a resolution urging the city counell council to use its best efforts to induce the contractors to purchase local cement provided it can be secured at is as low or lower figure as is that which the foreign brand is purchased for is but a reflection of the general sentiment the resolution adopted is as follows whereas the box elder commercial club by its regular appointed committee recommended to your honorable body in the early part of the present year that a sidewalk paving district be created in brigham city defining the extent thereof and whereas our honorable body did create said paving district and proceeded to advertise tor for bids for the construction thereof and the contract was let to the firm of 0 brothers who we are reliably informed intimated to your honorable body that they billy ally intended to us use i e t ue ag d en portland ortland brand ot of cement in the construction st of this work ork but who proceeded to use a foreign brand and have so continued to use the said fore foreign 1 ign brand in all work so far constructed and have as we are reliably informed refused to permit of any competition I 1 by denying the competing cement I 1 plants the privilege of submitting sealed bids for supplying said cement and whereas reus said committee in it its recommendations suggested that the ce cei i ment manufactured by our local cement plant be used the idea of the committee being that it if possible the city in advertising for construction of said aid sidewalks ask for bids for the labor only and reserve the right in said city to furnish any or all materials believing that by method the city I 1 could procure cement from our loc local a 1 cement plant at a greatly reduced figure and under the price that could be obtained by any private concern and whereas the sentiment of the general public is now averse to the use of any other oilier than our local cement and whereas we are informed that said contractors do not intend to use our local brand and knowing that our local cement company has done much tor for brigham city and box elder county and merits our qualified support and whereas we are advised that it was the thought end nd belief of your honorable body and the community in general that our home cement would be used in the construction of the pavement provided all other things are equal and we are of the firm belief that if brothers understand the feeling of pride that the community 1 in general has toward our own ogden portland cement industry that they will be willing to acceded to our wishes especially where they are not to be prejudiced financially thereby no be it resolved by the box elder commercial club through its board of governors that you do uso use your good offices with the brothers to use the ogden portland cement in completing the balance of their contract provided that said brand can bo be furnished them on sealed competitive bids at a price equal to or less than the cost of the foreign brand respectfully submitted this 3rd ard day of december 1912 board of governors box elder commercial club by WV J T OWE LOWE E W DUNN VICTOR E MADSEN committee |
