Show TEACH LOVE FOR THE FLAG Country's Youth Must Be Educated to Reverence Emblem for Which Brave Soldiers Died. Memorial day is with ua once again. In the cities, towns and villages of our nation the staunch old soldiers of the Grand Army of the Republic march under the folds of Old Glory to decorate dec-orate with flowers the graves of their comrades. With them at the cemeteries ceme-teries where thousands of the little marker flags flutter In the May breezes, Indicating the last resting places of those who bravely met the call when their country needed them, gather the Sons of Veterans, Daughters Daugh-ters of Veterans, Relief Corps, Spanish Span-ish War Veterans and various other military organizations, and one must not forget them the children. It will be observed as have been the many Memorial days that have preceded it, but it is not the same. On this Memorial Mem-orial day in 1917 our country faces a situation of momentous importance, filled with gravest dangers as well as greatest hopes for the future. For those sleeping beneath the sod the roar of the battle is over, the thunder of the great guns Is no more. But for 'these young men and women and for the children who gather with the veteran's what lies in store? Love for the flag that waves above the graves of these patriots whom we honor on Memorial day must be fostered. fos-tered. Patriotism must not be allowed al-lowed to die. The young men must not be allowed to die. Xne young men must stiffen their shoulders and stand straight in a resolve to hold fast to the principles for which the old veterans vet-erans beside them stood. The children who lovingly place flowers upon these graves must be imbued with a never-dying never-dying love of country. |
