Do we pass piles of old discarded automobiles which decorate the entrances to some of our communities without actually seeing them? Do we look beyond the dilapidated barns broken down fences and rubbish piles and see only the beautiful mountains in the distance? Too often we ignore these eyesores and simply turn our head instead of taking concrete action to abolish them There is a great need for landscape improvement in Utah and every citizen young and old has a definite interest in toting part in the movement to make this a better state in which to live IN ORDER to encourage a state wide landscape improve-metprogram The Salt Lake Tribune in conjunction with the Utah Associated Garden Clubs and the extension service department of the Utah State University offers a new and enlarged civic beautification contest for 1959 open to all individuals and groups in the state Work entered in this contest can be anything which will definitely improve the neighborhood community or state Clean-ucampaigns beautifying the entrances to towns roadside plantings street tree plantings community gardens church and school plantings landscaping of public buildings parks and removal of unsightly views There is even a division for private gardens n Judging will be on work complished in a riod one-yea- r acpe- HERE ARE THE RULES : 1 Awards will be given for the greatest landscape improvement by any individual or group on the community county regional and state levels 2 Certificates will be pre sented winners of community county and regional contests as follows: Class A —to garden club projects finished and financed by garden club membership only Class B— to garden club projects completed with outside assistance Class C — to commercial governmental or civic club projects Class D — to individual gardens 3 Judging will be on work accomplished within a period Community county and regional judging will be accomplished during the last two weeks In August by actual visits to the projects 4 First place winners in each class in the regional contests will be entered in the statewide contest 5 Prizes to state winners will consist of first and second place plaques In Class A Class B Class C and Class D 6 State judging will be during the first two weeks In September 1959 with actual visits to sites of projects 7 Winners will be presented trophies at the Utah Associated conGarden Club’s vention tb be held In Salt Lake City In January 8 Decision of judges will he final 9 A complete description of each projert should be submitted with each entry N TODAY'S GARDEN HINT HOW TO KILL WEEDS FST Used to be that driveway and patio weeding was an everlasting job That's all changed thanks to "Eveready" Total Weed Killer weeds Now instead of make the rounds with a sprinkling can and weeds in driveways patios walks are gone!
