Show FISH PRODUCE MANY EGGS i Scientific Count Shows Perch 10.2 Inches Long- Contained 30,480 More In 8mall Than Large. ' Information concerning the number of eggs produced by various species of flah has been limited mainly to rather rough estimates. According to the Allgemelne Fisch-erel-Zeltung, some careful counts were made last year at the Bavarian trout, hatchery. The first Investigations were j in connection with common trout tad , rainbow trout ; 58 specimens of the j former and 54 of the latter were j stripped, and the ova counted. The ; older and heavier fish were found to : have the most eggs (ranging up to about 3,000), but the younger fish yielded a decidedly larger number of; eggs in proportion to the weight e$ the fish. I The experiments were repeated with ' perch (I'erea fluvlatllls), in this case I the females just about to spawn helnic killed, aud the ovaries being removed j nnd dissected. The number of eggs In perch ranged from 3,710 for a fish four j Inches long up to 80.4S0 for one 10. j inches long; but In this species, also, ; the number of eggs per unit weight of fish is much larger in small than i In large fish.
