Show THE wm irrigation CONGRESS A great many people went down to salt lake city on iao monday n day to witness the opening of the national irrigation congress and to see the great electrical pageant at night A big disappointment was in store forthe majority of the brigham people who desired to go caused by the change in time ot of the motor car which left it at instead of cf 81 a in and the few who made the car in time had to run tor for it no word had been given out of the me change in time whereby the motor departed thirty minutes earlier and most ot of the passengers Pai passengers were making their way lie surely to the depot when the gasoline train started off f for or zion I 1 the feature ot of the opening of the congress was the arrival of the queen and her tra train n and the rendition of the famous ode to irrigation given below by the tabernacle choir aegis ted by a specially selected orchestra J of thirty five pieces and the great ora gan the odes ode was rendered under the direction of professor john J mcclellan CI ellan who wrote the music and after each moyese movement t of f tho the great production had been rendered round alter after round of applause was given when the last movement set to the melody of america was reached the i great audience stood and remained standing until the finish then erous applause applause broke loose and PS P 4 fessor mcclellan e 0 ot f thanks to professor mcclellan and the singers which was given elven with a vim amid tumultuous applause lion hon fred J kelsel keisel of ogden then proposed that a rising vote of thanks be gilem mrs gilbert McClur mcclurge gr of new york who wrote the ll libretto brett end arid the great audience sprang to its lect as one abne man and applauded the lady lade who so pleas I 1 angly and aid strikingly portrayed the t clinics west J irrig irrigation Alon in verse the writer has never heard anything like the rendition of that great masterpiece ter piece of poetry set to music the soloists mrs hazel taylor peery of ogden and prof john T iland hand of salt lake were at their latest est and their clear voices rang out above the chorus and orchestra like great bells and as they sang alone or together they had no trouble whatever in making their notes reach to the uttermost corner of the big building the music is grand fitting perfectly the grand theme of the poem and the interpretation by the choir with accompaniments under the baton of the man who composed it was a revelation one man said it was the most wonderful thing ho he could conceive of to think that mortal men could produce the like of st it we are very sorry every one of our friends and acquaintances could not have been present and heard it the dramatic moment of the opening of the congles con gres was when the announcement was wag made that the queen and company were approaching pro aching the orchestra under prof mcclellan crashed the opening chord of march from the opera aido aida a herald ann announced bounced the approach of the queen then the orchestra began the beautiful strains of that ahat noble selection and the queen with her consorts and pages dressed in court costume followed by the maids of honors honor marched slowly into the building from the south west entrance under tinder the choir loft As the procession moved slowly toward the highest stand of the tabernacle the great electric welcome utah above the organ was flashed on and the ten thousand people in the historic building made the structure ture shake with appl applause As the queen reached her place the choir and orchestra struck up the star spangled banner and everybody were on their feet immediately in the chorus the choir members waved small hags and the effect was electrifying people sang clapped cried anil and were so moved in their feelings that it was hari hard to find a suitable way of giving tent 0 o the welled up willin them it was a wonderful exper ence and the visitors from other states were simply carried away by the eavor of the spirit the regular program of the congress vas tas carried out at both sessions dur ng the day and in the evening the rand electrical pageant brought the keople 1 THE irrigation CONGRESS continued from first page pace that standing on the railing near the boston building on south main street and looking up the brilliantly lighted thoroughfare all one could see as far as the eye could discern des cern was a seething mass or a humanity that completely filled the space from the building line on the east to the building line on the west side ot of the street never in the history ot of salt lake city have such decorations been used and the effect was simply great main street was and is a veritable bower of flags bunting and pennants at short distances a string of flags and the national colors are strung across the street and then a line ot of electric lights for illumination purposes at night while the buildings all along the street are covered with flags and bunting state street is similarly decorated with reference to the lights and building decorations As the pageant moved down the street all box eldor eyes were look ing lor for our maid of honor and the county float the writer stood on the wrong side to get to see maid anna but we rushed through exchange place to state street and stood within a few feet of her as the pageant moved back up the street and we were proud of her she looked every inch the personage she was representing represent irl and it if we have any fault to find whatever it would be the fact that she was bot ot made queen the royal float was a gorgeous affair ter her majesty sat on a throne arranged on oil a high pedestal rising from the rear of 0 the car so that she was several feet higher up than any one else on the float grouped about her were the immediate i maids of helair and the conty conaty maids bat all around the edge ot of the tha car tac fac wg out the girls ellis ell Is were dressed in white arid and wore re athing os cis their heads they were a beautiful group box eliter countes Coun tys representative being one of the louliest lov lovI liest iest the county float was a revelation and should get first prize it was a great horn of plenty done in gold and banded with strings of electric lights so BO that it was a great blazing thing out of the mouth of which poured fruits vegetables and grains is such profusion that they spread over ove 11 the entire car from one end to the other i TB arvo young ladies miss bliss L fis kelsen and miss pett sat on each side of the horn and threw apples to the crowd along the line the design was drawn by mr air NT C simonsen Si under whose direction the float was arranged S A elswood constructed the tin casin casing and the electrical fixtures and effects were under the direction of august J bylls arx r s elders float was distinctively ively a home product nearly all the others were designed and built by it a company which contracted for the work and the hand of the designer could be seen in all tle the other floats for in a some respects they were identical chete were many beautiful exhibits iu in fact the pageant was a gorgeous spectacle from ginning beginning b to end and rid well ell worth north a trip to salt L lake ale to see the crowd in attendance at the first day of the irrigation congress was estimated to be the largest ever gathered together in salt lake city early in the day all the hotels were filled to their limit and an appeal was sent ont to the people of tile the city to open their homes it was a great day perfect weather and the attractions were a revelation that made every native son feel proud of his home while the visitors must have received imbres sion slona of a pleasant
