search and rescue stations Under direction of headquarters 2nd A A F search and rescue section a large single enmonoplane with gine high-win- g a tremendous load carrying capacity has been assigned completely equipped with necessary rescue-aifacilities and is ready to take off on short notice to aid in the search and to bring aid to stranded fliers in this part of the country This particular type of plane the UC-6- 4 has proven its worth in bush sections of Canada and especially the far north where they have been used successfully for years to carry personnel heavy mining machinery d and other equipment In and out of otherwise inaccessible places This plane can be equipped with floats as well as skis The 2nd A A F search and rescue section as it is set up at the present time consists of one supervisory station located sta-at Colorado Springs two key tions dividing the 2nd air force control area into northern and southern zones with 3 unit sta- tions In each zone Two Men In Unit The Wendover field unit station consists of 42 men Capt Thomas M Smith 3rd eschelon shop officer who as search and rescue officer pilots the ship and Sgt Kermit P Peake whose primary duty is to maintain the search and rescue airplane and to act as a carp dumper with secondary duty during periode of inactivity as member of the base alert crew Before a plane is cleared for takeoff the flight plan of his mission is relayed into a central station at Salt Lake City Upon approval of flight plan the plane leaves the field Two notations on the flight plan are namely: The length of time necessary to reach his destination and the amount of gasoline carried Emergency System When a pilot is 1 hour overdue emergency warnings are teletyped to all army and C A A weather stations who in turn notify their respective towers and range stations The tower and radio range control operators send out calls to the "missing" aircraft every 5 minutes until hope for contact has been abandoned After his supply of gasoline is assumed to have been exhausted and no word of the plane's landing has been received the at Colorado visory Springs is given an aircraft accident notice The key station is notified as well as the civil air patrol The unit stations are alerted and the area for search is isolated with one field selected as a search base The planes are assembled there and under the direction of the key station officer areas for search are assigned to each Supplies Parachuted The planes take off and when the lost aircraft is found supplies clothing and equipment are dumped to the grounded crew If medical attention is needed a flight surgeon trained P specially for this type of work Is flown to the spot and he with the station aftground t necessary equipment i Returns from 645
