WVIk! harly Word on Ltes, Sooners Boast Manpower By John Mixmey Tribune Sports, Editor In the last three years, the Oklahoma football team has turned in a record, including two national championship seasons and Orange and Fiesta Bowl victories. The University of Utah, for three years, has a record. B"t the main difference in the match-u- p for Saturdays game at Norman is in manpower, in depth and class. 5-- Example. Quarterback Tom Lott was injured in fall practice before the Vanderbilt game last week. Senior quarterback Dean Blevins, who started the first four games a year ago until he was injured and lost the job to Lott, couldn't move the ball club. Lott came in for two series and couldnt get anything started Enter freshman Jay Jimerson, who gave Oklahoma the lead for the first time in the ball game with a run Jimerson probably will start against the Utes as rests his bruised knee for Ohio State the following week Consider Utahs situation Junior college transfer Randy Gomez will start his first major college game, before 71,186 screaming maniacs in the stands Should anything happen to Gomez, Harlan Karnofsky is No 2, but Kamofsky, as a frosh, played about one quarter in the last games of the season. Behind Kamofsky, the line forms to the right since Senior Pat Degnan, who quit the squad and then returned this week, is not in shape and wont make the trip Injury-wisthe Sooners probably will not use quarterback Ixrtt, nose guard Reggie Kmlaw, with center Joe Farthing a question. Utah is not expected to take tailback Steve Peake and safety Phil White. Jeff Parker, also hobbled most of the fall, will be No. 1 tailback. Utahs defense, especially down the middle, is suspect. Oklahomas defense was excellent. The Sooner offense gave Vanderbilt seven fumbles, including turning the ball over on the first five Oklahoma possessions. Despite Vandy getting the ball five times, the Sooner defense gave up only 12 points on the fumbles. The temperature was 100 degiees and the defense had to play too long, the Oklahoma coaches agreed. Coach Barry Switzer summed up the performance as That was the worst I have seen an Oklahoma team play. Mistakes, penalties, fumbles Ive never seen so many in one game. Boy, do we have work to do! 1 still think we have a good football team, but we have to execute on Saturday if we expect to win. Oklahoma ran 57 rushing attempts for 235 net yards with right half Billy Sims carrying nine times for 75 yards, left half Elvis Peacock 13 for 67, Jimerson six for 40 and fullback Kenny King seven times for 32 yards : Blevins completed three of six, one intercepted, for 66 yards and Lott one for one for nine yards. tt . e, Aggies, Tigers: About Equal By Ray Ilerbat PASSING: Again, both teams quite similar Eric Hippie of USU has thrown 22 times, completed 13, had none intercepted, two touchdowns and has gained 176 yards. Lloyd Patterson of Memphis is 14 of 29, 167 yards and one touchdown. PASS DEFENSE' Neither team has been hurt by the deep pass and both have allowed 1G0 yards per game against them. SCORING : Memphis has scored three touchdowns m two games all against Tulane. Aggies scored two TDs and had three field goals against San Jo..e. As yet, neither team has found its scoring punch SCORING DEFENSE. Both tough to date. MSU allowed only a touchdown in each game, w hile Aggies gave Spartans just one TD. Key defensive plays and breaks helped Aggies keep SJS away from the goalline. SUMMARY. Aggies once again rated underdogs, but could pull another surprise w ith strong defensive showing and must avoid letdown similar to one which almost cost them first win State-Memph- is CENTER FIRE RIFLE CARTRIDGES Viking1 lo Pass Against WVImt 7mm Rem. Saturday at Wildcat Stadium, and the Wildcats figure to see more passes .n this game than in any other game this season. Our approach is to throw the hall, said Viking coach Darrel Mouse Davis. "We thmk we have the most exciting type of football. The Vikings put the halUip 64 times last week in a 2 loss to Cal Poly. Portland State threw at least 40 passes m 10 of its 11 games last year, when the team went 3 behind departed quarterback June Jones. Weber, which lost to Boise State 19-- 9 in its opener, is hoping to give Pete Riehlman his first win as Wildcat coach this Saturday, and it will have to stop the pass to do so. PASS OFFENSE Junior Mike Atwood replaces Jones this year for the Vikings and hit on 28 of 64 passes for 298 yards and two touchdowns last week. But he was also intercepted six times. Dave Stief, who made six receptions for 115 yards and two touchdowns, is the top receiver. Webers Morris Bledsoe clicked on nine of 21 passes against Boise for 165 yards, and Weber ranks first in Big Sky passing. Tight end Kent Critchlow was his favorite receiver with three catches, while Tommy Coleman, last years Sky receiving leader, has yet to make his first 1977 catch. RUSH OFFENSE The Vikings dont run much, but Jeff Salta (nine carries for 49 yards last week) was second in NCAA Division II in scoring last year with 23 touchdowns. PSU netted just 29 rushing yards against Cal Poly. Weber has the edge here. Erie Hill comes off a game, and the 'Wildcats, who netted 97 rush yards against BSU, look much improved in this area over last year with a better offensive line. PASS DEFENSE Weber ranks third in Sky pass defense, having yielded a 48 per cent completion rate and 140 yards against a Boise quarterback who was playing his first game. Tribune Sports Writer State The early word on the Utah if there can be such a thing since game Saturday the Ags have played just once and the Tigers have is that statistically there completed two games isnt too much difference between the rivals. Memphis State lost a 3 decision to Ole Miss and after leading 24-- 0 at last week riddled Tulane, 27-halftime. The Aggies opened with a 0 vietoiy over San Jose, and once held a 22-- lead. Both Memphis State and USU are pretty well balanced at this stage in their running and passing philosophies. The Wildcats shouldnt have to worry about that this time. PSU was ripped for 227 yards on the ground by Cal Poly. 22-1- 0 RUSHING OFFENSE: Utah State gained 243 yards in its opener while the Tigers average 190 for their two games. However, MSU gamed only 109 yards against Ole Miss. RUSHING DEFENSE The Ags limited SJS to 122 193 yards.
