Show PMT Boasts a New Look With Current Gypsy Funk Tribune Staff Writer Pioneer Memorial Theatre pulled out all it conventional stops Thursday night and presented a flashy, letem have it production of the Arthur Laurents, Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim hit musical, Gypsy." And though the bumps and grinds may have been a bit much for the autraditional, conservative first-nigdience (the strippers didn't get the desen ed applause) I say hooray to Tony Tanner who directed a show that wasn't afraid of "letting it all hang " By Nancy Michael Ruud as Herbie, the peieti mal boyfriend and agent, dearly turns in the best acting job of the eemng He's cocky enough to be thought of as an agent, yet eokes compassion to make you care for him And m a minor role, hut all the same, eery noticable, was Marsha Miller as the secretary and also one of the strippers, Eleetra She was joined in the burlesque routine by Shaun Nelson Bushnell as Tessie Tura and Jan Maxwell as Mazeppa ht . three of them strutted and humped and growled their routine across the stage in costumes that wouldn't have kept a mouse warm, much less a real big girl, and they were terrific. They looked right, they moved right, and they were right. Louise and June were double cast. As young children Anna Louise Maddock played Louise and Pamela Schaar played June. When they gren up, Teresa Allred was June and Denise llarmston was the girl who becomes Gypsy Rose Lee. Miss Harmstons portrayal was resen ed, intentionally so, and the transition from little girl to sophisticated woman worked quite well what m.mnci m Though not to belabor the racy side, it was the first time I remember the female lead in a PMT production being allowed to say all or at least most of the swear words, the first time Ive seen a man smoking a real cigarette on that stage and the first time I've seen the gals who are supposed to be loose, really be allowed to be loose. After all, it is the story of Mama Rose, who pushed and pushed her daughter through show' business, to make her a star, until the daughter became Gypsy Rose Lee, one of the most famous strippers of all time. Returns to Star Sue Ane Langdon returns to PMT to star as Mama Rose and is a much thinner Miss Langdon than when last seen on that stage. With a maturity about her that I dont remember from Bom Yesterday, Miss Langdon does achieve the feeling of the stage mother. And by the time her big moment comes in the finale, when she realizes why she has pushed Louise so far, she is convincing. But an along the way Miss Langdon falls extremely exhuberant actress into a pattern of what appears to be a Paul Lynde impression. The voice inflection at the end of a sentence, the cutesy expression, the aftei say ing a word. She proves in the end that she knows better than to fall into such acting gimmiery. It isn't necessary and distracts from an otherwise enjoyable performance. Crowd-Pleas- . Ip--- rt in 'Surf d tin The show is basically good mid m i t Sdnc. e - r.
