Show T7ie Ingalls industry s ONE OF the most consistent in the tourist business is the literary shrine. It seems that anyone who ever has read a line by a noted author feels compelled to drop in on the great mans home when in the neighborhood. The literary shrine is practically a cottage industry in the British Isles, with almost every hamlet in the land boasting of some association with a great writer that merits your attention. Something like that is going on now in America in the case of Laura Ingalls Wilder, whose Little House books have become a major television hit series. crowd-pleaser- The Wilder side of travel The 10 books trace the Ingalls family on its moves through four different states Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kansas and South Dakota. The locale of the TV series, however, is Minnesota and around Walnut Grove, Minn., a crossroads on U.S. 14 in the southwestern part of the state, and the setting for the Little House shows, the series has awakened a sense of history. It was the setting for the first book in the series, Little House on the Prairie. When the TV series started the governor of Kansas proclaimed Laura Ingalls Wilder Day as a tribute. THE PROPERTY now is part of a cattle ranch belonging to Mr. and Mrs. William Kurtis. A schoolhouse, built in 1872, has been moved to the site and a cabin from the same period also will be reconstructed there. The Ingalls well has been identified, as well as several local landmarks mentioned in the book. All of this activity in Minnesota and Kansas is viewed with amusement in the town of DeSmet, S.D. This prairie village, 113 miles due west of Walnut Grove on U.S. 14, was the scene of an annual pageant and a lively tourist trade based on the books long before the TV series appeared. Six of the books are set in DeSmet and Wilder lived there from 1879 to 1894. She was married there, the rest of her family is buried there and two homes in which they lived are preserved there. The homes are open t. daily, May-Augus- THE LONG Winter, a pageant drawn from in the books, is usually held on three weekends in late June and early July on the site of the Ingalls homestead.
