Show Inefficient Spraying Outfits. Very few small orchard owners have spraying outfits which ore capable of doing a good thorough Job, no matter how careful the operator may be. Deep Cultivation Harmful. Deep cultivation may do more harm than good. Three Inches is deep enough around trees once In about two weeks. Injury by Rodents. Watch for damage by rabbits and mice. Heat Is Trying on Cows. I The hot summer weather Is likely to be trying on cows. Make provisions provi-sions for shade and give all the protection pro-tection possible against flies. Cows should have pasture and water In abundance abun-dance If they are expected to produce during the summer. Good Orchard Hints. Watch the weather, watch Insect and fungous diseases and watch the fruit. If an additional spray Is necessary, put It on. Don't allow past efforts to prove abortive on account of the need of one more application. Clean fruit will pay best. ' Thinning Fruit. Thinning of plums, pears, peaches, npples and quinces Is best done by removing re-moving first the defective specimens, then taking ofT the excess ones that would touch each other when mature. A Strawberry Disease. One of the most common diseases of the strawberry Is that known a"s "leaf spot." The disease appears on the leaf about blossoming time in the form of small, discolored spots. |
