Show NO WORSE THAN OLD PLAGUES ? Doubt Whether Infantile Paralysis Causes More Deaths. Than Do Diarrheal Diseases. s: v The epidemic of infantile paralysis in New York shows sign of abating. Meanwhile, Chicago is almost free J from it, and there is nothing to show j. that the few cases in Illinois have any ..' connection with the epidemic raging in the East. ." Many things combine to make this J. the most awe-inspiring visitation that the metropolis has had in years. The persistent mystery of it, the high per-r per-r centage of mortality, nnd the fact that a large proportion of those who recov- er must suffer from partial paralysis the rest of their lives these things may well disturb the sleep of parents. And yet. the probabilities are that diarrheal diseases are killing far more babies in New Xork even now than is k infantile paralysis, and if the intestinal i complaints leave no muscular crip-; crip-; pling behind, in a considerable proportion propor-tion of cases they do leave damaged constitutions. The old plagues are the ' most dangerous ones, after all. Chi-s Chi-s cago Journal. |
