Show I The Salt Lake Tribune, Sunday, May SB Outdoors SO, 1965 tj Don Brooks Old Dead Fish Blasts Chances For Womens Club Award Well, little chums, your Dead Fish Editor has sure gone ind done it this time! ' What has he done? He has forever blasted his chances of being named Our Knight In Shining Armor by the Federation of Womens Clubs. Instead, he stands a doggoned good chance of being named Lowdown Skunk of the Year! Thats what. What started all this business is an article in The Tribune today by Hazel Parkinson. Its on the womens pages and it is directed at the DFE. It concerns action taken by the good ladies of the Elsinore Literary Club. It seems they submitted a resolution to the convention of the Utah Federation of Womens Clubs protesting opening of the fishing season on Memorial Day weekend. The state group adopted the resolution with only one dissenting vote. It was after reading the article that the DFE took the drastic action that blasted his future with the little women. He scrawled a message to Hazel that went this away: Sorry, gals, but I aint interested! Now before the gals arise in their organized wrath and buy a hemp necktie for the DFE he would like to point out that this is only the second year the season has opened on Memorial weekend. The writer was at both commission meetings when the decision was made and he heartily approved. ft Main Reason for Action Shall we rook em now or take them home? Youthful anglers Mike White, left, and his The reason behind the commissions thinking is that here is a golden opportunity to provide Utahns with three days of recreation. And forget it not, little ladies, it is part of the commissions job to provide as much recreational opportunity as it can within the limits of available wildlife resources. This complaint thing is not new. There were a few complaints last year, but very few. The big majority of John Q. Public 'likes it fine. Look north to Idaho, gals. Our sister state also opened to Yellowstone Saturday. And then look farther north Park. Traditionally, the season in the park has opened Memorial Day. And I submit that the anglers who visit the park each year on the opener can count just as many white crosses on Tarawa and Saipan that have a tender significance as we can here in Utah. I will make no predictions, but I would bet a few beans that in years ahead when the three-da- y holiday is not availto first Saturday in back its will commission able the go ' . June opener. is forced DFE comes the up But every time this protest ' , to point to an irrefutable argument: You dont have to go fishing on the opener! It reminds me of the time, an angry gent called up to protest commission action in moving the opening hour up to 4 a.m. Thats too early, he yelled. "I like to sleep later! Otter Creek The turnout at Otter Creek was absolutely amazing. Wardens counted 551 boats at one time. They said it was by far the largest turnout in the southern region. Tribune sports writer Bill Coltrin, on hand at Scofield said 384 boats were counted, while an estimated 1,680 anglers fished from the banks. No count was reported from Pine View, but observers said it was plenty crowded. Now heres a rundown on specific waters from various parts of the state: bler. The veteran fishermen who fish Scofield a lot are of the opinion that bigger fish will be taken from Scofield as the season advances. Bigger Fish They point out that Scofields tributaries were loaded with big spawners this spring and the spawners werent hitting Saturday. So bigger fish is the prediction arojid here. One thing that amazed me and other anglers was the fact that a lot of fish were caught Saturday in the real shallow portion of the reservoir above the island. Plenty of limits came from that section.
