To have good bloom, roses should be correctly pruned. Time to Prune If you havent already taken care of this important task hr your rose garden now is the time to do it. For those of you who are expert rosarians and know the art of s correct pruning, there is no need for information on the subject. However, there are many new rose growers and some idea as to how to prune will prove helpful. Most important is to first purchase a good sharp pair of pruning shears; You will want some that will prune cleanly and not tear the canes. Keep the pruners sharpened. The first step is to study the rose bush. Cut out all diseased, dead and broken canes. Weak growth should be removed as with three or more good capes uniformly distributed around the bush. Canes could be from 8 to 12 inches high. This also depends upon the bush. For More Bloom As a rule you prune heavier and lower for exhibition blooms and less severly for lots of bloom and more color in the garden. Floribundas are not pruned as heavily as the hybrid teas but much in the same manner. Hybrid tea climbers can be pruned in the spring if this is necessary, but ramblers should be pruned r right after blooming. You will find that you will obtain much more bloom from your climbers if you will tie the canes in a horizontal position or fan shaped if you like.
