| Show 4 4 1 12E The Salt Lake Tribune Sunday October 21 1990 1 Jack Goochnan's Cityview Temple Square Hotel transformed into Inn at Temple Square on A little more than two years ago Sept 22 1988 to be precise the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints shattered the local calm by announcing the temporary shuttering of the the toTemple Square Hotel-- and tal renovation of that same hostelry Why this was being done to the modest far from modish Temple Square Hotel while the larger more lavish and more prestigious Hotel Utah was to remain closed posed one of those - : '4":' woo A frif ea :d - 'N Jack Goo dman lie 1 a doorway from the lobby to the garage will help make matters easier for today's motorized guests Things were rather different when the architectural firm of Ashton & Evans was blueprinting the rather modest Temple Square Hotel in 1929 Their rather unostentatious haven for weary businessmen tourwas ists and LDS Conference-goer- s to be a modest but modern affair with smallish rooms and a lobby area awash with potted palms Completed at a cost of $500000 the hotel was lobentered through a triple-arche- d by on South Temple It remained pretty much unchanged from its formal opening in January 1930 until a new burst of colorful Spanish styling (plus a mite of Italian) gave things a new look in 1942 during the management of Clarence E Wonnacott Along about 1970 during the years when Grant Mabey was its manager the Temple Square received a bit of a bashing as the South Temple marquee and those triple arches were replaced by big store- - e' a ee--- - c'- -- P"44:iwir- 11' - i - than in the days of yore Those 90 rooms include five bridal or execu- tive suites and five parlor suites with connecting bedrooms As for the unloved (but Fred's the Carriage Court Restaurant promises — in the words of its management "a 100 percent smoke-fre- e environment a charming restaurant and informal country-in- n air quiet elegant surroundings superb food and gracious service" Physically the new Carriage Court Is located unless I'm off a few rods at the site of the former Trailways- Gray Line bus depot The actual site is of the bygone Fred's coffee vacant at this Joleen Meredith and her administrative assistant Tonle Klein assure me that when winter lights twinkle across the way in the trees Of old Temple Square a new ice cream pr- lor wiave been installed therein to need satisfy our city's for thick milkshakes sundaes bae nana splits and other goodies Outwardly of course the cldef k structure's change in the appearance is the revision phyils once backside Architect Jay Ritchie keeping in mind official orders to "give it the character of a European hotel" has centered attention on the inn's western side There's now a curved driveway from West Temple set off by brick and stone pavement shrubbery and a pillared wall The latter in part shields viewers from a modest new 68-cgarage off to the east behind the neighboring Utah Woolen Mills shop Guests will now drive 'round the brick driveway to a Saints Happily the transformation of the Temple Square Hotel Into the plush Inn at Temple Square has now been completed Next Friday this reconstituted establishment formally reopens under the manage- ment of the Hotel Temple Square Corporation a member of the Deseret Management Group A construction fence of considerable dimension still surrounds the vacant Hotel Utah — once designated "the Classy Lady" by management expert PhyHas Steorts and a host of guests — but we now have a rather classy inn at :the corner of South Temple and West Temple Wayfaring strangers be they business travelers or tourists will continue to miss the Hotel Utah but the Inn at Temple Square will at least partially fill the gap for visitors who want to settle in for a day or two in the heart of the town's business culhistoric district tural An anif you'll take time out to visit the newold Inn or imbibe a nonalcoholic beverage while downing a meal at its glittering Carriage Court you will very likely agree that the local firm of CooperCarlson-Duy-Ritchie Inc has done a fine job indeed as the lim's architects and planners They have in effect transformed a Depression-perio- d commercial hotel that featured 190 smallish rooms a bus terminal a souvenir shoppe and Fred's Family eatery into an inn that has (at least outwardestablishly) the air of a first-clas- s ment The Inn at Temple Square has just 90 guest rooms — 100 fewer ' -- ' - myster- ies always puzzling to local gentiles — and even some inquisitive Latter-da- y - ee' - low-price- - high-calori- red-bric- of the president — canopied entrance glass-toppe- d church-owne- d threesome the Hotel Utah the Temple Square Hotel (or Temple Square Motor Hotel) and the Hotel Utah Motor Lodge At this juncture the Temple Square Hotel or rather the Inn at Temple Square is the sole hostelry that has survived as such Unless of course there is a midstream rebirth of new thought concerning the Hotel Utah It is currently undergoing a multimillion-dolla- r reconstitution intended to transform it into a church office buildin- g- one complete with a rooftop restaurant and public lobby But maybe there will be a revelation of sorts!
