It seems "life begins at 80" is one of the first demarcation zeroes I ever heard Oh how it would be to reach 20 was special even to me Of course had its moments of trepidation The happiest day of Terry Dill's life was when he turned 50 "I know it sounds selfish but that's the day when I got my shot on the Senior Golf Tour" he said Wednesday after carding a round of 70 in the pro-aprelude to the 1990 Showdown Classic here It was a Sunday May 13 1989 "That was my birthday We were supposed to qualify the next day on May 14 for the meet in Sleepy Hollow NY I walked into the registration room and I can remember being so disappointed when I couldn't even find my name in the pairings for the Monday qualifying round" Here's a guy who had waited for nearly two years for this oppertunity a guy who had been off the that spawned not only the PGA Tour but also the foundation for the over-5crowd that is now frolicking through a 42- event Tour Trevino Rodriguez Dent Archer and Coody — and even Nicklaus now and then when he tears himself away from megabucks endeavors on the side — jump right out at you in perusing through the pages of nostalgia that is the Senior PGA Tour guide But to know Dills story is to know you can go home again — and find a nice little nest egg in the pantry -Hey I was like most every other decent golfer as a kid I was 14 I was pretty good and I dreamed of the PGA Tour Ben Hogan gave a little clinic in Abilene Tex just down the road from Dills home in Sweetwater Then I knew it was golf for sure I wasn't as lucky as some kids My mom and dad were both school teachers and I had to work a lot but I still squeezed in g Dick Rosetta fit - 'Pe"' Executive Sports Editor lar PGA Tour for all but a few months since 1971 and he's "screwed up" his papers "Oh Mr Dill happy birthday to you We figured a nice birthday present would be an exemption into the tournament You don't have to qualify" Dill remembers the receptionist saying Later that week the native-borTexan who had hung his lawyer's shingle out in Camden SC for 10 got to stick 13 years from 1979-8candles in his birthday cake — 13 candles and $536677 for his tie for 13th place with a total of n 9 207 "I was off and running again" said Dill one of the "old" guys who remembers the '60s as the decade torPt0440ftFFges 0 $20-millio- n some golf" He squeezed in enough links time See Column 1 D-- ' By Marion Dunn Tribune Correspondent JEREMY RANCH — Scott Polychronis and his course preparation crew have put in a lot of hours getting the Jeremy Ranch course ready for this weekend's Showdown Classic and it The roster of players in this year's Showdown Classic is impressive and almost all of them has earned at least nation-wid- e recognition as a talented striker of golf balls But two of them should be especially endearing to the average player They are Tommy Bolt and Gay Brewer Bolt and Brewer were both big enough names back in the 1960s and 70s to have written successful "How to" books on golf In 1968 Brewer came out with his How to Score Better book titled " than You Swing" In the first chapter Brewer tells his readers that of all the lessons he learned during the five lean years he spent on the Tour immediately after turning pro the biggest was about confidence He said that a lot of people talk themselves out of whatever they're trying to do before they even get started by thinking that they don't have a chance Then he wrote: "I know because I had that problem for a long time To start with I had — and still have — a swing I injured my right elbow as a kid which stops me from taking the club back like other good players do I have kind of a loop as I switch into the downswing about it "I was pretty when I started on the Tour I'd hear guys say 'Look at that guys weird swing' Some of the pros would bug me too Nobody meant any harm but it began to get to me "Looking back what I'm mainly thankful for is that I stuck with my I realized I had to go own swing with what I had or give up my game What I aimed to do completely was get the most out of what came naturally to me" That's great advice and Brewer certainly did well winning 10 regular Tour victories Ile might have done even better but he came along just when a guy named Arnie Palmer was in full swing Brewer and Palmer finished in a tie for the 1966 Tournament of Champions title at the Desert Inn in Las Vegas The playoff was over 18 holes on Monday and there was a near riot before the match began when the fans angry at being charged extra for a playoff stormed the gate to set the tempo for the day Arnie's Army never showed much consideration for the other guy and that day was no exception If Palmer was away and hit first the crowd would start to move down the fairway In one such instance that day Palmer hit and the crowd surged so quickly that Brewer was caught in the back of the neck by the rope holding the crowd back Brewer handled the situation with class On the Senior Tour going into this Column 1 See Yr- pm — Golf The International LESPC 5:30 pm — Bowling LaMode Classic aSPIC 7 pm — Boxing Collins vs Chirino AK'l - Running acks OVerrtill BYU ' 14(4 g Bellini Corley Lead Pack By Kurt Kragthorpe Tribune Sports Writer PROVO — After only one afternoon BYU halfback Stacey Corley was worn out frustrated and discouraged about competing with teammate Matt Be Rini That's enough golf for a while "We're not playing again" says Corley "until I improve" As for football the Corley-Bellin- i rivalry is on again in the Cougar camp Bellini is the starter but BYU coaches know they have to find ways to play Corley Suddenly the Cougars are loaded with running backs Besides seniors Be Ilini and Corley junior Eric Mortensen is available at halfback At fullback they have juniors Peter Tuipuluto and Scott Charlton — plus senior Mike Salido back after missing last season with a broken leg "Six or seven of us could start anywhere in the conference" says Be That's the dilemma for Lance lineman Reynolds the who coaches the running backs "how we can keep 'em all happy I don't know" said Reynolds Last season BYU generally used Be Rini as a receiver and Corley as a runner although Be llini ended up with 90 carries to Corley's 53 because he was playing much more The biggest difference was Bellini's 43 pass catches and Corley's two — and opponents knew what was coming when one or the other was in the game "We gave that away a little bit too much" says Norm Chow BYLI's assistant coach The book on Corley was that he had trouble running complex pass routes and receiving — but he claims he was two for two in catching passes thrown to him In any case Corley's lack of playing time was a source of mild disagreement e play-callin- g among the coaches No doubt Corley showed flashes of what he could do — the NCAA record-tyintwo kickoff returns for touchdowns against Air Force TD run against Utah the his season average of almost nine yards a carry "Every year things have gotten a little brighter" he : g d says Corley and Bellini reported together as freshmen in 1986 when Be !lint was a wide receiver "As far as concerned we're still pretty good friends" says Corley That's saying something considering Corley's long continuing wait on the sidelines After both redshirted as freshmen they went different direcs every-thing'- the opening game of the season Bellini was a starting halfback and Corley was out of school for academic reasons and would never quite catch up with Bellini on the field A decent runner on sweeps Column I tions t k By following Bel-Se- D-- D-- 4 444 c I |
