Show H)f Halt fafce DAVIS COUNTY FOCUS pilmne ide and 1 le Buns Like Rinuiin H orsing Aroun By Darren Tucker Tribune Staff Writer A lot of people who ride horses would never consider getting off and running for a few miles But that is exactly what a select group of Utahns likes to do They are the people who run in the competition known as "Ride and Tie" The competition is a sort of biathlon for men women and horses The idea is to cover 389 miles as quickly as possible without hurting the horses riders or runners "The race starts with a rider on the horse and a runner behind them" said Gary Thayne a ride and tie enthusiast "The guy on the horse rides for about a mile and then ties the horse to a tree The guy running then comes and gets on the horse passes the other runner and then ties it to a tree And they go on trading until the end of the race" There are about six teams that go to the national competition from Utah every year This year four of those teams placed in the top 15 "I think that's really a credit to Utah that we had such a good showing this year" Mr Thayne said He and his partner Bill Nelsen took first place in the masters division The team of Nick Larson and Pat Davies took 10th Dave and Debbie Wagner also took first place in the man and woman division with Con and Todd Wadsworth Draper taking second place overall "The Wadsworths are a great team" Mr Thayne commented "They've won the nationals three times" Like rodeo the ride and tie competition has its roots in the traditions of the Old West It goes back to the time when two partners may not have been able to afford more than one horse One of them would have to walk while the other rode Then after a few miles they would trade Of course it wasn't done with one partner running as fast as he could and the other riding at a full gallop "The riders and the horses have to be in top physical condition" Mr Thayne explained "I've run in about 15 marathons and competed in several triathlons myself And we train the horses for 50 to 70 miles a week" Wednesday Morning — August 15 1990 Vol 240 No 123 Section DA Page in I I Ft v i i to iisaws And he said the runners will run just as far while getting ready for the race Mr Thayne said the teams train for about six months before the competition usually held in California There used to be a Park City Ride and Tie competition as well but he said for the last two years it has been canceled But the sport is alive and well in Utah and Mr Thayne said he hopes the problems in Park City will be resolved soon and the competition will continue Ride and tie is understandably hard on the horses Mr Thayne said the horses used are usually Arabians known for their stamina and endurance And there are several "vet checks" during the race to make sure the horses are not being abused d or "After about 12 miles there is a vet check" he explained "A pit crew takes the horse and examines it They check its pulse and respiration and when they think it is ready to go they let a vet look at it If the pulse and respiration are still too high they have to wait They actually pay a lot more attention to the horses than the humans" As well as the veterinarian checks each team is required to do six "ties" during the race Mr Thayne and his partner do 40 This also gives the horse a chance to rest "A lot of these horse are so well trained when they see the runner coming they get in a position ready to go" he said A good time in ride and tie is about 4V4 hours Mr Thayne said He said that equates to about 6 See Page 2 Column 1 nil 1: ft 4 't 11' f Waimm over-stresse- Jlt ::M if t left and Gary Thayne took first place in the national Ride and Tie masters division The sport in which runners and horse riders trade off over a course is growing in popularity lis ft Bill Nelsen 40-mi- le ' v ' ' 'lt!
