Probably not But you've heard of people like him They're all over the newspapers and TV You may have someone like Ode in your family It's a cinch there's someone on your block or Mike Royko Itt where you work That's becatise Ode is truly a man of our times He is a victim A victim of circumstances Or bad luck A victim of an indifferent society Or being in the wrong place at the wrong time Or something or other One thing is certain Ode got a bad deal and it won't his fault See Ode was Just walking along a street in San Francisco minding his own business Well not entirely minding his own business since his business is stealing Anyway be was tending to business He saw a woman carrying a purse and decided to acquire that purse Sort of a hostile takeover The woman resisted his takeover attempt so Ode who is 24 and a muscular 210 pounds knocked her down and gave her a few kicks The takeover was quickly completed and purse in hand Ode took off running Some people can'imind their own business In this instance it was a taxi driver who saw the whole thing He radioed an alert and followed Ocie Ocie's foot speed was no match for the cabbie's gas pedal and he soon had Ode cornered "I told him to halt" the cabbie says "and I saw him reaching for something I thought it worst about someone like Ode As it turns out be wasn't reaching for a weapon but the cabbie used his car to pin Ode against a wall breaking one of his legs The police came and took Ode to a hospital They took the purse's owner to a hospital too since she was banged up pretty badly A judge sentenced Ode to eight years in prison which probably means that he can get out in a few mouths if be doesn't bite a guard But Ode isn't the kind of guy to just sit there and let himself be a victim He's fighting back in the true American way He's suing He got a lawyer to file a suit against the cabdriver and the cab company saying that the driver used excessive force in catching him And be wants $5 million in damages because his leg still hurts and he can't run as well as he used to The case hasn't come to trial yet but I wouldn't bet against Ocie's chances After all a burglar once collected damages in California when he fell through a skylight and ac The Pubhe'llormn if ' I 1 Forum Rules Public Forum letters must be submitted exclusively to The Tribune and bear writer's full name signature address and telephone number Names must be printed on political letters but may be withheld for good reason on others Writers are limited to one letter of 300 words or less every 14 days Preference will be given to typewritten (double spaced) letters permitting use of the ben problems arise s Too many find no one to bona they can explain their problems Both parents work away from home during the hours after school and weekends when children need advice counseling and companionship When s become old enough that they no they find no one longer require a baby-sitte- r at home with whom they can communicate They then locate persons generally their peers who have similar problems At this point they conceive ideas and make plans that violate legality If families had a less affluent lifestyle they would not suffer nearly as much as they do when children lack supervision and emotional support when they turn to crime when they resist academic learning When will school officials legal providers and enforcers look at the real reasons that children turn to crime? When will parents provide life and understanding for their offmethod spring? The present Is accomplishing nothing toward correcting the problem but certainly is increasing taxes for everyone EF FOWLER Bountiful teen-ager- teen-ager- writer's true name All letters are subject to condensation Mail to the Public Forum The Salt Lake Tribune PO Box 867 Salt Lake City Utah 84110 Gail Johnson's tirade against the "environmentally vain" (Forum April 23) exemplifies the very principles of greed and hypocrisy that have caused our present state of environmental decay It is true however that not all of our exploitable resources lie underground So why start (or stop) there? In our quest for oil we could raze all the trees which clutter the surface of the ground and only serve to impede access to the proposed drilling sites Then we could strip-min- e the land in the hope of finding coal At last having strunk the precious oil which was our initial goal we could burn the trees the coal d 11 percent carbon and the content sediments from all 15 million acres of school trust land in all seven counties in which they are located I'm certain the money generated from the sale of these resources would more than amply compensate our children and provide them "the benefits of their birthright' Gail Johnson and others like her may one day thank the Sierra Club and other environmentally vain organizations for saving the d intenworld from the good if tions of the environmentally apathetic and the environmentally ignorant DAVID E JENSEN Not Hypocrites George Ottinger (Forum May 7) feels that didn't jump onto the Wilkins since Wagon that we are hypocrites Quite the opposite is true The Webster decision was handed down in July 1989 Work on the battle forefront began immediately while BIM Professor Richard Wilkins didn't show up with his big guns until Just in time to shoot down all efforts to enact protective laws Not satisfied with the Utah spotlight only he sent a videotape "Freedom Means Choice" (read: Choice to Kill) to Gov Andrus of Idaho Behind closed doors he admitted to Utah legislators that his bill would indeed be a reaffirmation of Roe and was not as protective as the laws already on Utah books Three legal experts drew up the bill to ban abortion as a birth control method Even Professor James McDonald testified the bill "had no legal flaw" We have yet to see any outline of the laws submitted by Dr Wilkins Many felt our bill was too lenient as it outlined provisions for abortion in cases of verified rape incest severe fetal deformity longterm health problems and life of the mother This goes to show that when you give in to the "hard-cases- " screams their goal is to keep abortion as a method of birth prevention FPIA is actually IFPA (International Famand funds under ily Planning Association) President Reagan were withdrawn from abortion providers and rerouted to contraceptive programs So if there were "69000 more abortions and 1200 additional pregnancy-relate- d maternal deaths" as a result that raises some fascinating questions concerning contraceptives Fellow members of the LDS Church cannot "call for" anyone's excommunication any more than Catholics can "call for" someone to be installed as Pope JEENA NILSON : ' it :P ') ! !
