"It was the talk of my neighborhood too Every time I talked my friends would say 'Did you hear (Van-dros- d Barry's voice? What happened man? Where'd you get that?!' It blew everybody away" His childhood friends were the first to fall but not the last The Texas-born White — who was raised in Watts where he belonged to gangs began recording in 1973 and thundered onto the charts with his deep vocals and with love songs that pushed the edge of intimacy "He's brilliant" says Lisa Stansfield a British singer who lists White as a chief influence "All the stuff he did is amazing very clever You listened to him singing and you just felt like he was opening up his soul just for you" Many felt that way White sold - - C'IN— EMA SWEETIE kOtti:45 W 5:15 9:15 FOUR IIII SORN Starts y- —if Mozart were movies would be As tine es anything the hest them is hard NI W114 Ot151 ' ' - 4IFI SO ION Shows 710 8 55 ALL SEATS 5'100 Stereo M$T 'rFP'ÁTAlireDN 3605 So STATE OW at 1:00 at 1:30 Show ''' Tom Hanks In "JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO" (PG) Rex Harrison - ANEW FILM 00 Steno 900 Satufday Motiroes Joe 310 Stella Mon & Nes A0 Seat $i 00 Forget the Molls As sad 700 7o P 491 so "JOE VERSUS VOLCANO" plus "STEUA" (PG) - VALLEYVU Dopit4N : 3500-S- rwmo ' 0' Ski Ile CasinoHotel Las Vegas Fremont & 3rd - Downtown Free validated covered parking file "TEENAGE MUTANT DOLBY STEREO NINJA TURTLES" (PG) TODAY AT 1:30 3:25 5:207:10 9:10 "BIRD ON STEREO AT Z30 5 glIP 7: VIP TICKETS ACCEPTED 6PM SORRY A -- 3k 1 or I J- ' 111111— so od i or rxif 1' 4 - -k -- - V I 21( t f 1111111 0 CO °DM'' Si 4 i -- 4 kl'a'g - tgy V 0' ' 1osJ ot m11 UN 1 NI14 - wccels 'OP 6601° VI c00 0:1 iLes'scli vec OVi"‘ lo''''' c t 4 V‘tC'1 hoO '' !:fik:2 )':':: ' - im IMMNIMMR ' tp- - N ItZti:tclr - z " ia'- - : -- t:' -- : ' ''' ole i '''''7:rtIll:4 '7 1033 EAST t 0 st 1-- SUGARHOUSE 4ik: -1 04- - - 51 r r i':'-!ra- ) ' ' i i'' 'GP' ' Richard Schickel TIME g4A7 1 (HIGHEST RATING) 4 ':i:' '' A FASHION PLACE i5 EAST ti - x 've- - 0a 15:i41L4 ?4741' c $!'" former gang member whose own brother was killed in the streets — money and materialism are the demons blurring values he feels are necessary for survival "I know it's easy for me to say these things being a successful musician and all" he says "But happiness is finding something you love and doing it I'd do this for free I really would If you told me tomorrow that there was no more industry or selling involved I couldn't give a You'd come to my house to hear me sing" That isn't likely to happen in the near future As the title of his new album says White is back to making music after a respite during the midg come'80s It's been a back — none of the singles from "The Man Is Back" have cracked the Top 20 on Billboard's Black charts — but White is anything but discouraged "I'm back in active duty yes sir:" more than 100 million records during the disco heyday of 1973-7- 8 bursting onto the R&B and pop charts with songs like "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby" "Can't Get Enough of Your Love Babe" and "It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next to Me" Besides his own music he produced dance-floo- r hits for the female vocal trio Love Unlimited and for Love Unlimited the Orchestra By his own account White has received more than 170 gold and platinum recording awards from around the world The net result was that for most of the '70s White wore the crown as pop music's love leader "When you hear him sing it's pure romance" say3 producer Quincy Jones who used White as one of the singers on his recent hit "The Secret Garden" which is a song about seduction "You can't get much better than Barry for a song like that" White however has found that his "lurve man" reputation — as he pronounces it has its pros and pitfalls On the' plus side he's had lots of encounters with couples like the one he met at a recent party in New York "They came up to me with a picture of a son named Barry that they made while listening to my music" he says "That's very very flattering" On the other hand White is often asked if he has reservations about writing sex songs in these days of AIDS and sexual conservatism "Not at all" he says"In my songs I never said the word 'responsible' until now but I used other ways of saying it I never asked people to I never told guys to have orgies go out and bang up the world I always said love should be one on one and always told gentlemen to go and communicate with their ladies — to care more express more show some 72-acr- Hawthorne Fla 4 to feed his family I have to get up every morning and push that time clock you know" While Diddley may be working out of necessity these days that's hardly the motivation for members of the group Nightshift who will be playing behind him during his Central Florida shows The band has worked with such acts as Gary US Bonds and the Crystals But the group's leader Johnnie Cable said that he jumped at the chance to play with Diddley "When I found out about the gi& I was pretty excited" Cable said "I ve done a lot of "Ungs like this before — backing up other oldies rock 'n' roll acts But he kind of opened the door to rock 'n' roll and everybody else ran in I really enjoy his music too He sings good plays good and has a really good groove way you're going to get them into court you know" As for his many imitators Diddley is unimpressed: "They hit at the lick but its not said "But it's working for right" he 'em so I leave it alone" At 61 Diddley still must maintain a steady touring schedule to support his family and pay the bills at his modest home on a e spread in AT 1:40 540 7:40
