' N - -- ' 4"114!'- A' ' '14 ''' sl' 1: - r 7i '''l t 114 tt - 01 4 4- - Of '1 ' i k' " i -A - e Ais - 24 ' ' '' eff''e 41' ' : 4 't Nit ' - - ' -- - '' F —f - - kt - ''ri 114 'c''') - I Jr-e- - - ' 11 a N - 14- - ir- ioV 1e-- t'-- I 1 n 1 : - 1 0 1- N d off-roa- d - - cle industry and people were thinking they were toys" Mr Behunin said –ORVs can be a lot of fun if you know what you're doing But they are unique in operation as far as handling goes and the Legislature felt kids might need some training" However Mr Behunin does not believe this ORV law — which includes education and registration — will solve all the problems "I think this will make a difference but I don't know it will exempt everyone from having an accident" Mr Behunin said "It will make youngsters aware of environmental concerns and make them aware of where they can and can't ride" In Salt Lake County there is one site where ORIís can be driven on state land Called Lark Sand Dune it is north of Berriman On weekends about 200 ORV e riders race around the park according to Rosalie Gilpin a Jordan River State Park ranger The entire park is fenced but hard to find since there are no signs The only landmark — besides sand dunes — is a brown dumpster and restrooms Darely visible from the road "We've had a number of signs and chemical toilets out there but they've all been vandalized so it's a little discouraging in that respect" Ms Gilpin said "In my opinion the users could treat the area better" The Lark Sand Dune 011V park was opened in 1977- 78 The name comes from Lark a defunct mining town that was built where the park is now Ms Gilpin said covered site with mine The area is a natural sand-duntailings The park was started when 011Vs became popular Ms Gilpin said vehicle "We are obligated to enforce law and with that obligation comes providing some facilities for ORVs since they pay a tax and registration each year" Ms Gilpin said "Lark is one way of showing ORV riders that yes we do have an area for them to ride" Two other state operated ORV parks are the Corral Pink Sand Dunes near Kanab and Little Sahara near Delta d Most of the vehicle riding in Utah occurs on US Forest Service land Ms Gilpin said off-roa- d 5' 41!
