Show Tip Salt AF Sergeant Declared Guilty In Beating Death of Boy, 3 - FARMINGTON (AP) An r jury found Air Force Sgt Eugene Leroy Dixon guilty of manslaughter Friday in the beating death of his stepson, David Slaght. The jury deliberated just under two hours before returning the verdict eight-membe- was set for Sentencing March IS in 2nd District Court and Dixon was ordered to surrender to Davis County sheriffs officials Monday pending the sentencing. Dixon, 23, was charged with manslaughter after the boy died last Oct. 19. The jury was instructed before beginning deliberations it could find Dixon guilty of manslaughter cr a lesser charge of negligent homicide, or innocent. Defendant Testifies Before attorneys made summary statements, DLxon took the stand and gave his account of events preceding the childs death. Dixon admitted spanking the boy with a flyswatter, but he said he had no animosity toward the child and gave him mouth-to-mout- h resuscitation when he realized the boy was injured. In his final remarks, Davis County deputy prosecuting Carvel Harward told the jury no one saw Dixon hit the boy and added: You dont have to see something happen to know what I think you can tell from the evidence what happened to that little boy." Cautions Jury ... But defense attorney Darwin Hansen cautioned the jury not to consider old bruises found on the boys body by the state medical examiners office. He said the only bruises that caused the boys death were chest bruisas and said the jury must determine if Dixons actions caused those.
