Show POLITICS AND THINGS US AS SEEN BY A NON PARTISAN what in ili thunder is a pivotal state stated here we have been going through severa revera weeks of 0 the most remarkable political campaign in half a century nearly every big newspaper in the united states has been supporting president tatt Taft in his campaign for himself and ills his assaults upon his former chief colonel roosevelt the colonel a wonderful campaigner has fought back against this solid publicity has overridden the assaults reduced to cool and calculated type now and stands upon the threshold of the chicago convention with tar far more power than any of the big papers dreamed he would amass all through the campaign the tatt taft bureau the white house and the tatt taft press belittled the campaign of theodore if tatt taft received two votes and roosevelt twenty in one state the papers would announce the accumulation of tile the pair and would forget to mention the score finally T R swept across state after state winning the primaries controlling the state conventions and then he wound up with pennsylvania maryland california and last but by no means least tafts tafta home state taft had beaten roosevelt in new york the home state ut of the tha colonel and it was a return of the compliment when roosevelt overwhelmed the executive in ohio lust just prior to the ohio convention president tatt admitted that that was the pivotal li i state saying that the nomination depended upon the result there the common people then had their first intimation that the colonel was a contender for the press had been throwing away most of the news of roosevelt victories and splattering ering tatt taft gains all over the paper so it came as a great sho shock ck to the majority of the people ot of utah to learn that roosevelt had a lookin look in after all and it the fault of the majority that it was misinformed for the people had been betrayed by tile the daily press the presidents statement accentuated the interest in the ohio campaign and last tuesday when roosevelt corralee corr aled thirty two of the forty two elective delegates in the preferential primary won control of the state convention which will name six delegates at large those who had taken the presidents statement for its face value regarded the nomination of roosevelt as a cinch not so with the taft bureau nor with taft after saying that ohio would decide the great national race the president came out of ohio with ten lonely delegates and then claimed that that was sufficient to nominate him mckinley went him one better by claiming COO votes despite the ohio verdict so we are led to ask what in thunder is a pivotal state after all it if taft was right when he said ohio would decide the matter of a nomination is he correct in his assumption that ten votes out of forty ight eight Is sufficient vindication for him to base claims of a victory upon it it was not until after ohio had spoken that the tatt taft press began to talk of a third candidate and the absurd mistake the president made by taking the stump against such abam a campaigner as roosevelt the president has made a poor showing on the stump as witness the vote in ills his own state upon which he centered the heaviest fire roosevelt too was in ohio talking the president off his feet from one end to the other of the state I 1 why conceal the truth tatt taft never can be nominated at the chicago convention ti without the intervention ot of a miracle roosevelt will have enough votes in that convention to control ita it absolutely without counting any ot of the uninstructed or contested votes both or of which are counted by the taft managers for him roosevelt has more than taft and he will get a healthy i number of delegates who are elthe either r uninstructed or contested in the new york delegation for instance there are arc 88 uninstructed votes otes these men have been polled and one third are found to be tor for roosevelt new jersey is yet to come the vote being taken next tuesday think you that tatt taft will make more of a hit there than he I 1 made in ohio his own state texas wont be for tatt taft despite the frantic efforts being made by the federal machine they have federal burchers Bun chers in the lone star state as well as in other states not so far away but what we could land on them with both feet in one jump arizona is to name six delegates arkansas two ta 0 north carolina and oklahoma borna two each and tennessee two south dakota Vilf W 11 elect 1 ec t delegated cje Dele le git gatea e i june ij 4 when ten more will be added to the string both sides are making a hot fight in this state which will be the last to elect the arizona primary will be june 3 it if taft has enough votes to win why extend the agony by going into new jersey and texas and south dakota and some other states to get more the weekly is presenting a table this week showing the actual standing of the delegates and candidates from all of the states which have so far elected this table is considered a fair presentment of the situation and it was difficult to obtain for the reason that there is no source of information i this side ot of the river the salt lake papers would be plastered with tab talles les showing the standing if there was any way in which they could be construed as showing a taft advantage since this cannot be done even by the expedience of distorted calculation of which all of them have shown themselves amply capable seekers alter after the truth are compelled to look elsewhere it is a singular fact that in ten great states where presidential primaries have been held tatt taft has been outvoted two to to one in north dakota wisconsin illinois pennsylvania new hampshire massachusetts oregon nebraska maryland and california tatt taft polled poled a total of while the progressive gres sive wing of the party received these are approximate figures fi ur this verdict comes in response to the question as to whether the rank and file ot of the party sympathizes sympathize with the stand patters or the 41 it appears that the people have decided in favor of a cause that stands for the promotion ot of human rights rather than the protection of property rights over the great organization known as the republican party there Is moving a change the people are giving expression to their sentiments on great national questions and they are repudiating the commercial republicanism started by mark hanna and fostered by many bosses since his time goodwins Good
