Navratilova, the Wimbledon champion, almost certainly lost her world No. 1 ranking Friday when she was upset in the semifinals by amateur Pam Shriver. If Chris Evert reaches the finals by beating Wendy Turnbull in their match Saturday, win or lose Evert will likely regain the top spot on the computer rankings that she has held for most of the last three years Navratilova's eyes were a bit moist and her voice was occasionally shaky as she described her stunning loss but she maintained her composure far better than two years ago when she broke into tears after being eliminated in the first round by Janet Newberry. Navratilova. 22, has played in the U.S. Open six times and has never reached the finals. In 1973. when she was 17. Navratilova lost in the first round, but was not surprised. The next year she lost in the second round, but still wasnt very shaken. In 1975, Navratilova was already considered one of the rising forces in womens tennis and a serious challenger for the title. But at the Open, she made perhaps the most serious decision of her life. Navratilova defected from her native Czechoslovakia during the 1975 Open and cut herself off from her family and friends. Though tom by the emotions of being a young woman without a country. Navratilova advanced as far as the semifinals before she was lieaten by the eventual champion. Chris Evert Adopting the United States as her new home and moving to Dallas, Texas. Navratilova stuffed herself on all the pleasures of the American marketplace. For a long time, the whole country was like Disneyland for her. Her weight ballooned and her game stagnated. Navratilova went on a crash diet before the 1976 Open and it left her weak and nervous. When she lost to Newberry, all her frustration poured out. Last year, Navratilova again reached the semifinals but was stopped once more, this time by Australian Wendy Turnbull. With her tremendous clutch victory over Evert in the finals at Wimbledon early this summer, Navratilova became No. 1 at last. But her reign was Beaten in the Open semis for the third time Friday by Shriver. If he doesn't touch the ball and it goes out of bounds, it goes back to the original line of scrimmage. But if a team goes into punt formation on tourth down on the 35 or line, instead of the usual field goal formation, dont boo. Maybe the coach doesn't want to give the opponent art extra 20 yards, should the kick miss. There may be some confusion in the substitution lor faulty or torn equipment this fall. The new- rule says "If a player's jersey is so in all torn that it does not conform to Rule respects, or if the shoulder pads are exposed, he must leave the game, or be charged a time out to repair or replace the torn jersey." This change is aimed at the "tear-awa- y jersey, which was replaced almost every time the w earer was tackled. Under the new rule, the player must leave the Held to don a new jersey, or face a time out to change if he stays in the game. In theory, I guess, he could rush to the sideline, change jersey and rush back to the huddle and if he got back in time it might be legal. The intentional grounding" of a forward In the past, when a pass has been quarterback wanted to stop the clock, he could throw out of bounds. Now he better have a potential receiver in the v icinity of that toss, or he can be penalized for intentional grounding of the ball. Another rule pertains to crowd noise hampering the quarterbacks calling of signals. In the past, the quarterback has informed the otiicial his team mates cant hear his audibles" or snap count, and the official has given him a free time out while the crowd is supposed to quiet down Generally, this only encourages the crowd to make more noise. The home team usually asks lor quiet, in good sportsmanship, but now there is a penalty clause against the home team for continued poor sportsmanship in this case. You must understand the referee doesnt have to grant the quarterbacks request for time on noise, if thp referee doesnt agree with the count will request In that case, the continue against the oifense getting the ball in play. However, if the referee agrees to the request, he will order the clock stopped and charge himself with a time out. The offense may huddle at this point while the official asks the defensive captain to appeal for good sportsmanship and quiet from the crowd. When the referee is satisfied, he will count on the offense. start a new In the event the noise continues, the quarter-hacagain may request help from the official who will stop the clock and ask the public address announcer and the cheerleaders to cooperate in quieting the crowd. However, should the noise continue, the quarterback may ask again for help from the official and this time the defense will be charged with a time out. In the event the defense has used its three time outs, the team will be penalized five yams for delay of game. And if the noise continues, each delay will cost the defense another five yards.
