Show Up and Down the Street 4 The Salt Lake Tribune, Wednesday, March C 7 20, 1978 AM Park City Ventures Lists New York Stock Exchange $26 Million in Losses By Robert H. Woody Tribune Business Editor VOLUME d government statistics 'Squeezing Ground Shaft sinkers, attempting to get entry into the west flank areas, encountered squeezing ground that resulted in caving despite installation of steel shaft sets and concrete between the steel and the rock. Mine management turned to other areas to look for reserves. Drilling from upper levels hit some encouraging mineralization, but not in areas available for production. The Venture partners announced the indeterminate suspension of operations and organization of a study group to consider tiie future of the mine, an 800 ton daily mill. In the meantime, the Ventures group will continue to make advance royalty payments of $140,000 a year to UPCM. And the UPCM still continues to receive interest payments under the agreement it reached in 1971 for sale of its resort operations. Those totaled Evel Knievel Toys Come Off Market NEW YORK (AP) Because Evel Knievel got himself on the wrong side of the law last year, the Ideal Toy Corp. is taking stunt motorcycles and other toys that bear the jajled daredevils name off the U.S. $301,000 in 1977. It also received interest of $355,869 from a $4,966,952 land and water sale agreement reached with Greater Park City Co. GPCC subsequently assigned the rael estate to Royal Street Land Co. Payments included the $224,500 balance on annual installment of $350,000 in the land sale contract. Valley Resort Planned Royal Street is engaged in the development of the Deer Valley resort. A wildcat petroleum well drilled by Colorado Energetics Inc., on UPCMs Weber Coal Co. property just east of Coalville, was drilled to 17,301 feet at cost of $4.3 million to the operator. No significant shows of oil and gas were encountered, but Energetics has left casing in the hole with the possibility it may drill another 2,000 feet to try for other horizons. UPCM reported 1977 net income of $18,000, or .3 cents a share, on revenues of $571,000, compared to $4,000, or .1 cent a share, on revenues of $552,000 the year before. The annual meeting will be May 23 at 10:30 a m. in the Utah Power & Light Co. auditorium, 40 E. 1st South. market. Based on what happened last fall, theres no reason to continue production, Zeke Rose, a company spokesman, said Tuesday. Knievel, 38, is serving a jail sentence in Santa Menii a, Calif., on his conviction last fall of beating his former press agent, Sheldon Saltrran, with a baseball bat. The company recognizes that it sells its products to children and that it has a responsibility to the children and their parents, Rose said then, when Ideal first took the question of future marketing of Knievel toys under advisement. Rose said Tuesday the firm plans to continue to sell the toys in Germany and the United Kingdom. He termed European sales a very small proportion of total sales of the toys, which include a stunt motorcycle that does flips and an Evel Knievel canyon sky cycle. The Knievel toys netted the company $100 million in the last five years and were terrific sellers" in the past, Rose said. th Even though consumer price inflation should run near 7 to 7W percent in the first half of 1978, the rate of wholesale price inflation should peak temporarily with the large gain for February, which has already been announced," said Richard B. Hoey, chief economist at Bache Halsey Stuart Shields, in his weekly commentary on monetary conditions. on inflation. Finally Posts Gains March 28, 1978 Miles P. Romney, a retired mining engineer, who has served as UPCM president during its lease, said development of two target areas failed to pan out during the year. Park City Ventures lost more than $26 million since Aug. 1, 1970, when it took over operation of United Park City Mines Co. Ventures lost some $6,713,469 in 1977 alone, according to the annual report of UPCM. Park City Ventures, a project of the Anaconda Co. and Asarco Inc., finally threw in the towel February 15. Mining and milling operations were the first time in more than a stopped century that the Park City District was without some kind of ongoing mining operation. r Stock Market The Market In Brief Advances outpaced declines by about a margin on the New York Stock Exchange, and the NYSEs composite index rose .33 to 49.96. Kidnapped Executive Sues Employer By Larry Kramer Beatrice did nothing at that time to protect him against the eventual kidnap. As a result of what Curtis calls deceit, fraud and misrepresentation" on the part of Beatrice, he was then kidnapped. Curtis and his wife, who also is a plaintiff in the case, further claim that Beatrice took no action because the firm believed the kidnapping to be a hoax, perpetrated by Curtis. According to the complaint, the firm began to take action toward his release only after subjecting his wife to a lie detector test some six months after the kidnapping. Washington Post Writer American An WASHINGTON businessman kidnapped and held for eight months by Colombian terrorists while he was head of a Beatrice Foods Co. subsidiary there has filed suit in federal court in New York asking for $185 million in damages from Beatrice claiming the firm did nothing to free him for eight months. Gustavo Curtis, 54, headed up Industries Gran Colombia S.A. in Bogota when he was kidnapped on Sept. 28, 1976, according to his complaint. He claims that after the kidnapping Beatrice told his wife Vera who was a television talk show host there not to take any action to rescue him because the company would handle the matter. The complaint also states that Curtis was warned by the American embassy in Colombia in July 1976 that his photograph had been found in the possession of known terrorists and that he was a potential kidnap victim. After notifying the Chicago-base- d conglomerate, Curtis claims that his employers said they would take measures to protect him and that he should take no action on his own. Beatrice Did Nothing said He that he would have left his job at that time but he couldnt without the firms permission. He claims that Carter to Raise Duties on CBs transactions totaled just over $1 billion, with the Bank of Japan virtually the only buyer. It was Tokyos second heaviest trading day in history. The record was set during the dollars decline in 1971, when $1.25 billion was sold in a single day. Japanese banking sources said a large share of the dollars were channeled into the market through foreign banks operating in Tokyo. During the incident, Curtis claims he was confined in cage-lik- e quarters" by his captors. One of Curtis' attorneys, Leonard Diamond, said that Curtis was constantly watched by teams of three men in masks in a "hollowed-ou- t cave 60 feet under ground. Never Heard Voice "He never heard a human voice for eight months, Diamond said. Although the original ransom demand was $5 million, the company hired two British terrorist experts to negotiate that figure down to $450,000 at the time of his release on May 18, 1977. Diamond said that the British negotiators and the Beatrice lawyer in Bogota were jailed for a time for arranging the ransom payment, because there is a military decree in that country against paying ransom to (AP) Curtis wife Vera was considered a local television star in Colombia, Diamond said. An Israeli, she hosted an talk show. m The Curtises now live in New York. Diamond says Curtis is looking for a job, but technically remains on Beatrices payroll. His address was withheld from the filing. The company still wants him to go back to Colombia, Diamond claims. They say lightning never strikes twice in the same place. PennPL Murkt1!
