Show r t f I Cuba Details Role in Ogaden War Reuter News Agmcy Cuba publicly acknowledged Tuesday for the first time that its troops fought with Ethiopian forces in the Ogaden desert war. HAVANA An unprecedently detailed account of the i conflict, published in a special edition of the official newspaper Ethiopia-Somal- Granma, disclosed that Cuban pilots, tank crews and artillery units as well as armored infantry brigades took part. Although the paper did not disclose the number of Cuban combatants involved, it indicated they took part in the most crucial phases of fighting. Arrived in December It said the Cuban troops began arriving last December and January. The paper said Ethiopian assurances not to invade Somalia shoula depend on due guarantees that aggressions against the Ethiopian revolution from Somali territory finally cease. The United States did not offer concessions after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, it noted. Granma report contained strong criticism of Western powers, particularly the United States. The dirty, opportunistic and criminal'' Somali attack on Ethiopia had taken place with the full knowledge and approval of the Western powers and the United States, it declared. Like Fascist Attack' This repugnant imperialist attempt to disintegrate and defeat the Ethiopian people was akin to the Fascist attack on the country in 1935, Granma added. The report, accompanied by several maps pinpointing the most important actions, gave a detailed account of much of the fighting. It said the decisive attack on Jijiga city which sent Somali forces into retreat took place only after a surprise move by tanks, artillery and infantry along dangerous mountain passes over mud and beneath intense rain. Earlier, a Somali attack was stopped just The tnugiily-worde- d The Salt Lake Tribune, Wednesday, March 1 1 ! ) yards from the strategic road between Harar and Dire Dawa, the last major defense points of Ethiopia in the Ogaden. forces which reThe revolutionary pulsed this attack on Jan. 22 included the first Cuban troops to arrive at the front, Granma said. The account also reported setbacks for the Ethiopian and its allied forces. During the assault on Jijiga, Ethiopian forces were dislodged from one salient and had to retake it, it said. The Soviet Union had supplied Ethiopia with "indispensable military equipment, instructors and advisers, Granma said. Last year "some artillery specialist from a revolutionary country of the region also helped Ethiopian forces repulse an attack, Granma said It did not reveal the country. Granma made clear in the long report, which came in the form of an editorial, that the Cuban view was that the attack on Ethiopia had been in the service of and defeating it had been imperialism vital for the future of Africa. 500 "A lot of people are kidding the President about having college professors as his advisors.
