Show ako PEOPLE III ACT1011 0 o I TyT1 FPI (74 - el LI (1 L-- 1 t 4 H s n 4 - 1 1 - Behind the scenes they do as much to help capture criminals as the agents M the Reid Br FRANCES SPATZ LEIGHTON 1 "' 1 k ( lig' FBI now celebrating its birthday was formed in as a small detective force calling itself the Bureau of Investigation not becoming known as the FBI until 1935 Today it employs over 15000 people One of them is Paula Travers who all the while she was growing up had a goal — to be a part of the FBI She came by it naturally Her father was an FBI agent So determined was she that she got started while still in college working as a lab messenger in the Hairs and Fibers Division of the FBI laboratory Inspired she took courses in chemistry and in textiles at college and today she works as a lab technician where she once ran errands On the day this picture was taken Paula was busy analyzing a particular piece of rope that had been used to tie up the victim of an armed robbery "Coming back after graduation to be a working member of the lab was the achievement of a goal" she says "At first the condition of smiling of the some clothing bothered me — the blood and the evidences of struggle But now it's become just part of the work It was the same with the bones too at first" The most bizarre case Paula worked on involved identification of a West Virginia man who had been so drastically mutilated that it took the sorting of a whole trash pile to find him His wife was accused of poisoning him strangling him burning him cutting him up and then burying the remains in a trash pile The entire trash pile was sent to the FBI Still enough bits of bones were found not only to identify the man but also to determine that he had much more arsenic in his system than normal when he died Paula At the moment has achieved her goal to work for the FBI Next step marriage?
