Most of them are enthusiastic for a couple of years— then graduation comes and the club members go their separate ways Richard Reams left) Richard Reese Curtis Hawkins Gary Jones Bob Irvine and Mrs Gary Jones Bock a mountain climbing club which originated at Olympus High School However there are some clubs that keep their interest alive through the years improving and expanding them until they become not just high school playthings but worthwhile organizations Such a club is the Alpen Bock climbing club Six years ago HOME Magazine ran a feature on a group of Olympus High School students who had started their own climbing club They called it the Alpen Bock (which means mountain goat) 'and their primary purpose was to climb and have fun And they did! f are members of the Alpen Dr Funshlne by Bill Weber Lets Make A 'Mike' TODAY WE'LL MAKE A MICROPHONE— WE’LL NEED A CIGAR BOX A DRY CELL 2 CARBON RODS WIRE AND IN FACT they were the first to put on an exhibition of rapel-lin- g Getting yourself down to the ground by use of a rope) g in a incident at Olympus High The Alpen Bock might have gone on as just a bunch of teens climbing for fun cooking up zany things to do and eventually fading away except for an Incident that swayed their obhair-raisin- jectives In the fall of 1959 a boy was on Mt Olympus The sherneeded help iffs jeep and three Alpen Bock members volunteered their services REMOVE THE CARBON RODS FROM THE CENTERS OF TWO FLASHLIGHT CELLS SAW ONE IN HALF DRILL A SMALL HOLE IN ONE END OF EACH PIECE SHARPEN BOTH ENDS OF THE OTHER ROD TO FINE POINTS WITH SANDPAPER lost patrol CUT 2 LONG PIECES OF COPPER WIRE (extension cord or bell wire) INSULATED FASTEN WIRE TO EACH SMALL ROD CONNECT ONE END TO A POLE OF A DRY CELL: CUT THE -O- THER WIRE 12” FROM THE BOX AND CONNECT ONE END OF WIRE TO JTCOTHER CURTIS HAWKINS Steve Utley and Dick Wistline climbed rocks in pitch darkness and assisted the jeep posse by working the ropes to help rescue the boy and bring him down in a stretcher to safety Their services were so appreciated that the jeep patrol made 'the club its mountain rescue division From then on the Alpen Bock had another objective— search and rescue— and the club’s stature started to climb Its members went on more rescues improving their skills and techniques with rescue equipment They even traveled to West with the jeep patrol to for survivors in the Hebgen Dam earthquake Yel-losto- search aster TODAY the Alpen Bock has 24 members They vary in age and occupation and come from various areas in Salt Lake and Vicinity Some are married now Some aren’t But they still have the unity that it takes to make a good organization Members of the club haven’t limited themselves to pist the to do their Salt Lake climbing The Grand Tetons of Wyomimg the Sierras of California-even some of the pinnacles of Europe felt the footsteps of the club The club also is e a g e r to share experiences with other mountain climbing dubs Articles have been written bv Fred Wilson and Richard Reams and sent to climbing magazines for other clubs to read and in this way share the knowledge of a new route or first ascent on a new climb Now recognized by the American Alpine Club the Alpen Bock is setting even higher goals Yesterday a bunch of high school kids with a lot of energy —today a good solid climbing club with some fine achievements in mountain climbing nad public service Tomorrow?
