At that time, gymnastics was a relatively minor sport and girls' athletics in high school were almost unheard of. But a young Russian named Olga Korbut set imaginations on lire with a dazzling gymnastics performance in the 1972 Olympics. And Nadia Comaneci's perfect performance in 1976 didn't hurt things. Girls' Programs The girls' programs in high school came of age and young women suddenly had the chance to compete alongside the boys in intcrscholaslie athletics. Gymnastic schools started springing up all over the country and girls started training, hoping one day to match the skill of Olga Korbut while gaining the fame. The high school teams gave girls a chance to compete on a local level and gymnastics became a major girls sport. It was a lot of fun being a part of the 1972 Olympic gymnastic team, said Nancy Thies, who is one of 50 instructors teaching more than 350 girls Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at the University of winter gymnastic clinic. That was a turning point for gymnastics. They moved from being a minor sport in the mind of the public to an important one." r ': .. i ; fe fe r Tl I fc. if t'l ..--; v. V 1976 I$ 'll Special to The Tribune BYUs basketball team puts its All College Tournament championship hopes on the line Wednesday at 8 p.m. (MST) when it meets Oklahoma City, the host team in the tournament. The Cougars earned a victory over St. Josephs Monday while the Chiefs took a 3 win over Ohio University in opening round action. Jay Choesman. Verne Thompson, Mark Handy, Vance Law and Glen Roberts all scored in double ligures to lead BYU to its sixth win in 10 decisions. Oklahoma City's big gun appears to be freshman Ernie Hill, who scored 25 points in the opening game of the tournament against Ohio. The Cougars should have a bit of an advantage on the boards because the Chiefs' tallest player is Greg Krause, who hit six of seven from the field and hauled down eight rebounds against Ohio. BYU appears to have a good shot at making the finals of the 41st annual Tournament, alter showing much improvement in recent weeks. Balanced scoring and help from substitutes, especially former Bingham High star Glen Roberts, lias helped the Cougar cause in recent games. The Cougars, who got off to a slow start this , season, appear to be rounding into shape as the Western Athletic Conference season approaches. Teams in the other bracket of the tournament include VMI, California, Baylor and Tulane. 68-5- 97-7- Jay Cheestnan Cougar Stalwart ' gypi if hi nifH y-a- ' v. Im really honored, said White, who was named The Associated Press offensive rookie of the year Tuesday. Im glad they would pick me over so many very good players, but the Super Bowl is the one thing I think weve all wanted from the first day of camp. A second-roun- d draft choice from Grambling, the White caught 51 passes for 906 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, offsetting the departure of veteran wide receiver John Gilliam, who played out his option. Sammy's playing as well as any outside receiver playing today, Minnesota quarterback Fran Tarkenton said. Not just as good as another rookie, but as anyone. Honored ST. It's fun to be a gymnast who has made it to the top. said Thies, because the respect is there. After competing, you like to feel like you have something to give back to the sport. The fun thing about clinics like this is being able to come and see friends youve met through gymnastics. One of the highlights of the three-da- y clinic will come Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Special Events Center when a Meet of Champions will be held, featuring performances by the former Olympians, members of the Repetory Dance Theatre, a demonstration by jazz instructor Chris Paternoster and a performance by some top freestyle skiers. interesting Personality Paternoster was one of the more interesting personalities at the clinic. The Californian specializes in jazz and rock dancing and has some interesting opinions on how these efforts can help gymnasts. We're stressing the fact that girls must perform like they are on stage when competing in gymnastics, said Chris. "Theyve got to be able to project their personalities. They have to entertain and use body language. "My whole responsibility at this clinic is to motivate the girls and get them excited about dance. Gil ls have to find a routine which suits them. One of the reasons the United States hasnt done well in gymnastics is because of a lack of dance. d DOWNTOWN VALLEY FAIR COTTONWOOD late-seaso- 3-- 11-- 3 Wins Irish Sweeps LEOPARDSTOWN, Ireland (AP) Master Monday splashed Longshot home the winner of the Irish Sweeps hurdle horse race Tuesday, carrying a payoff of $123,000 to lucky ticket holders.
