Dear Heloise: I wonder how many mothers or grandmothers have a small Marriages Change Because people change, Lasswell and Lobsenz say, marriages change. Couples must realize that what they are grappling with may be a normal consequence of lile, not a unique situation. There is not just one marriage in a lifetime between a husband and wife, but many, they write. "For example, young couples who marry today may expect to be wed for 50 years. During that span a iwuplc passes through many stages of the marital Me cycle. They are successively newlyweds, young parents of parents of young children, middle-age- d adolescents, mutual victims oi their own mid-lif- e crises, empty nesters, senior citizens." Each stage, they sy, brings its own conflicts and must be dealt with in its own way. Then, the book says, a couple needs to define their own particular form of marriage. The authors describe five general categories: the devitalized, e match without much involveplacid but d ment between partners: the marnage m which couples seem to need and enjoy constant fights; the match with few ups and downs , the total marriage in which the couples share all experiences to the point where individual growth is stunted; and the vital marriage in which the partners are deeply involved in each other's interests but not in the suffocating manner of total marriage. Three Obstacles The three major obstacles to improving one's marriage, according to the book, are fear of change; a need to place blame, usually on the other partner; and belief that a problem marriage will spontaneously improve with time. Once a couple admit the necessity of change, they must try to overcome any need to place blame, marriage. The authors argue reaching for lt that marriages are made by two people, that both are responsible for what happens, that placing blame only prolongs conflict and that problems will not go away by being ignoied. Once these basics have been established, the book says the couple can go to work on their marriage. Facing Problems At each point in the analysis, authors give a series of questions couples can ask themselves and talks they can perform to come to grips with the problems they identify . Among the points they stress are: Recognize the necessity of dealing with thes problems in a serious and professional manner as a marriage counselor does That means, they say. ?si y 4 -- - ' By Robbie B.
