Show Chinas struggle has been her life By Robbie B. Snow Lifestyle Staff Writer Since 1917 Maud Russell, 84, has watched the Chinese people struggle from feudalism and colonialism to present power. There is a long struggle ahead for the Chinese be it the people, a struggle to find Chinas path bourgeois path or the peoples path to a Modern China, she said in a recent stop in Salt Lake City to talk to the Young Womens Christian Assn. (YWCA) about her years in China. Ms. Russell first became involved with China through the YW'CA Learned The Language I was working for the national office when the recruiter came through. I asked for an interview. She asked me one question whether or not I had finished my graduate work? I told her no. And she told me we didnt have anything further to discuss. But I convinced her that it would be better if I learned the language first and then did my graduate work. She let me go and I never quite got around to that graduate work." But Maud does get around. While she has an apartment in New York, she is on the road driving her own car for eight months of the year. She is a spry woman and one would never guess her age. She is concerned and aware of everything around her, China in particular. Maud is a woman concerned shnut nihor women. When I was in China it was during a transitional period, when the women were coming out of the home and into the world. It was an exciting time. Women werent working against men, they were working with them. They realized that it was societys structure which was oppressing everyone, not just them. A Transition Belt "The YW'CA and the other womens groups were acting as a transition belt to these women. We were helping them organize and teaching them some basics along the way. We set up hostels all around the country as places where the women could come and find support as well as shelter. We worked with students, rural women, city women, whoever needed us. Sometimes men would brmg their wives or fiancees to us for education, sometimes they came on their own, but they came. We could also get away with a lot. What do women count anyway was the major attitude at the time. Mauds interest in China hasnt lessened over the years since she left the country in 1943. She has been back twice, first in 1959 and again in 1T3. The 1959 Visit 1 10 went back years after the Great Leap Forward was under way. Many Westerners laughed at those years They thought it was a leap backward. But they didnt see the peoples excitement at helping build their country. Everyone you talked with was working in a factory or melting metal in their backyard. Sure there were mistakes made, but they learned from those mistakes. And what other country can boast full employment? But in 1959 the people didn't understand the ideology of the late Mao They were doing it for the country hut didnt really know why. In 1972, however, everything was explanied in terms of Mso. Everyone had an awareness and knew how to use that ideology. The physical changes were the most striking. There were no more beggars or people dying in the street. The cities were clean. The people seemed to have a purpose. Keeps Up To Date And Mauds purpose is to keep people up to date on China. Its just too big to ignore. She edits and publishes The Far East Reporter," a magazine centering on China but also featuring articles on other far eastern countries. She also reads everything and anything she can find on the country. I found the most interesting article about China in the tobacco industry house organ the other day. One of the best Ive seen. But, you know, anything you pick up lately will probably have something about China in it. There is a lot of learning going on. Its exciting. But his woman who has observed so many years of Chinese history doesnt see a time of tranquility ahead for the Chinese people. juif estvle J fjkf 2bf .Salt Past 10 20, 1976 Monday, September First Section lanuh Food Women Tse-Tun- people-to-peop- le The Chinese know that they cant be an isolated country. Irritated In Michigan Dear Ann Landers: Six months ago our beautiful, bright, daughter, age 16, took her fathers revolver and shot herself through the head. We i.rc heartsick and baffled. Why? Why? Why? One of her friends told us she was on drugs. An autopsy proved it was not true. Another friend said she wasf very depressed and unhappy about the materialistic values of her parents. If so, we never had an inkling of it. Our daughter was extremely affectionate and outgoing. While we had the usual parent-teen-agdifferences, I cant recall any . t major areas of conflict. She was in love and her 4 sweetheart dropped her for ' Ann Landers another girl her best friend, in fact. It was a terrible blow.
