Loyalty To East ,rWe had to install more walls at East this year because of the ninth grade coming into high school The wall will cause less distraction but will decrease opportunities to students to audit classes. he said, in reference to classrooms In discussing Title IX, Dr. DeVnes appreciates the need for more opportunities for girls He believes that girls should have equal atliletic programs, equal access to courses and equal facilities. U is appropriate to provide girls with opportunities to compete in areas they have demonstrated talents There are some areas of the proposal, however, which need further study Dr. DeVnes becomes more animated when discussing student life and school activ lties All students should have pride in themselves and their schools. The best method to foster pnde is to permit students to become involved in school affairs. "We have a new auditonum, an excellent library-learnin- g center, and a fine career center, giving students a greater opportunity to become active in school programs. Dr. DeVries supports the traditions established by the Board of Control, Easts student government, and will strive to make it an active legislative body. He sees it to be alto student leadership program with the addition of more student committees. We need to create greater Involvement and increase commitment to school events. As far as the academic programs at East are concerned. Dr. DeVries says it will be difficult to improve an already excellent school. "When you are that good, the best goal is to maintain the high standards already established. Our fine arts areas could be enlarged by special awards given to students who take an enriched curriculum Students who participate in more than is required could receive a special award at graduation It will be a tremondous challenge to follow Joseph Richards I want to maintain the fine learning climate created at East I want to continue the academic superiority and the strong traditions which are already here.
