Show U ,jr 1 The Salt Lake Tribune, Monday, August ;tlif By Stephen P. Smoot Democratic State Chairman Women have come a long way In politics since the day Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th amendment and give women the right to vote. All the dire prediction failed to mate rialize, and the ladies set out on the difficult task of winning acceptance as public and party office holders., Today there are four million more women than men of voting age in the United States, 5,300 more in Utah.- - It would seem inevitable that women play a major role In'" forming policy and in 1 , executing it Some say women who become in volved in politics do so for idealistic reasons. Theoretically, this should eliminate ulterior' motives so often, attributed to male politicians. Has Sincere Desire Assuming that a woman has a sincere desire to x participate in political activity, a possible first step is to attend a mass meeting in her voting distrct. Here she should rm for an office in the district organization. This is usually a comparatively simple goal to attain. 1 The next step in broadening the scope of her activities might be a telephone call to her county organization, offering her services and talents in whatever capacity theyre most needed. This is usually a two way street because while shes giving aid where its needed, shes meeting other party workers and receiving inspiration, enthusiasm and ideas from them. One person might have suggestions on simplify ing a district canvass, another might come up with an jdea about luncheons or pot lucks as fund raising tools, Someone else might suggest formation of dis-mission and study groups. Knowledge of Issues A well informed mind and a working knowledge of current issues are prime requisites If a woman or a man wants to be truly effective in the political arena. Women have inventive and resourceful minds which prove invaluable in the practical application of ideas. It was women who put out the first simple mass distribution of Issue pamphlets, who. In the Democratic party first started, the party magazine, who wrote the first organization literature, who sent out the first organizationfield workers, 'Who first undertook large scale collection of small contributions and who first helped organize young people and even youth under voting age. It wasnt too long ago that national htdquar ters became no more than a small bookkeeping operation betweencampaigns. Again it was women who first saw the need for year around political activity and the constant replenishing of instructive political materials. Inspire and Encourage women More affikmore its becoming the task-o- f to inspire and to encourage all party members to keep on working for party victories. .After a good background of organization activity, and an intense interest in issues of the day, many women feel impelled to run for a political office. Generally speaking, women legislators do a su- perb job since their inherent idealism, coupled with a. conscientious sincerity, produces the highest type of lawmaker. Other women prefer to shine In the reflected glory of their statemen husband. In many cases a politically active wife is the biggest asset a candidate for public office can have when it comes to converting voters. Chicago Tribune Service If " Do Women Have Special Role in Politics? Girl Watcher Never Lets Object Know By Oma E. Wilcox Republican State Vice-Chairm- Do women have a special role in politics? Some people may women are useful when: Literature must be distributed; . Where much footwork, such as canvassing, is necessary; When campaigns ' by telephone aredesir-- - abler When clerical work is needed; when banMrs. Wilcox quets and table decorations must be prepared But beyond these areas of usefulness, the role of women is to stay in the background. If men feel this way they should have squelched the suffragette movement which gave women power at the polls, for more women than men seem to be exercising their franchise these days. Women In Majority If women of the country were to unite (which is extremely unlikely) -- then the male population would have little to say in the an make-u- p sufAmendment granted nation-widfrage to women, there has been a significant increase in womens involvement in government and poliand tics in Capacities of gov- e ernment. However, it is probable that men would continue to hold the majority of high offices in the land since women, generally, accept the Genesis injunmom to be helpmeets and, instinctively or by lndoctnna- tion, respect the leadership of men. The role, of women in politics is similar to that of men. Both, as citi- - . zens, have the responsibility to see that government has integrity and is representative: that freedom and justice are preserved, and order maintained. These duties, inherent in citizen-- ' ship, require interest and active participation. They imply awareness, a knowing concern for the welfare of individuals, a knowledge of government functions and mechanics, and a conviction concerning policies of p government. Include Privileges , .
