He was named a doctor in both civil and canon law by the University of Padua. Bitter religious strife forced the parents of Peter Paul Rubens to take refuge in Westphalia, and here Paul was born at Siegen on June 29, 1577. When he was ten years old his parents returned to Antwerp, where the atmosphere was highly favorable to the arts. Rubens finished his classical educa- tion in Antwerp. After his graduation, Rubens was apprenticed to Adam van a celebrated Noort, Antwerp painter, and under him Rubens learned the rudiments of his art, gaining official recognition as master in 1598. Here Rubens remained for three years, this experience proving to be of extreme importance to Rubens artistic develop- hy ment. After an absence of eight years, Rubens in 1608 wa recalled to Antw erp by the illness and subsequent death of his mother. The fame of his knowledge and qualities had preceded his arrival, and the king and queen prevailed upon Rubens to take up permanent residence in the Belgian provinces. On September 23, 1609, he was named Painter in Ordinary to their Highness, with a generous pension and with all rights and privileges belonging to the royal household. On October 13, 1609 Rubens was married to Isabella, daughter of John Brant, a councillor of Antwerp. This same year Rubens opened a studio in Antwerp and his reputation continued to spread. He had a gift of attracting. students of winning their admiration and esteem. In later years, when Rubens became celebrated and overwhelmed with commissions, his pupils the most famous of whom was Van Dyck The Health and Safety commit-- 1 tee, Logan Business and Professional Womens club, will be in charge of the program at the BPW dinner meeting Monday, 6.45 p.m., in the Bluebird. Traveled Widely The death of his wife, Isabella, In 1626, was a cruel blow to Rubens. Following Her death he d veled widely, lived at royal courts and became friends of men in high position. It had been suggested that Rubens owed his grand, unforgettable conceptions to knowledge of the world, such as few artists of his time possestra-an- sed. In 1630, when he was fifty-threFour-men- t, Rubens married Helena a girl of great beauty. She, as well as Isabella, figured in many of Rubens paint-ings. In his later years, Rubens seems to have been inspired more than ever by the glorious works of Titian. It was during ' j ' this period that this Flemish ' painter was producing some of his best paintings. Brightness in color, breadth of touch and pic- torial conception are especially striking.. The freedom of Rubens imagination never leads to confusion; on the contrary, we are told, he creates with a jet so vigorous and prodigal that his most complicated productions seem like the irresistible outflow of a surfeited brain.
