And this time, such isnt the case. To avoid possible arguments you DISCIPLINE VITAL TO MORAL POWER By MURIEL LAWRENCE Freds father was a rich business naan. He was proud he had cpme up the hard way" and attributed his success to his impoverished and anxious childhood. The fact that he could provide his boy with expensive toys and. other advantages worried him. He felt that they were bound to undermine Freds ambition and turn him into a mollycoddle.. This feeling made him treat Fred Inconsistently. When iV dominated him, he would suddenly dicide that his boy was a sissy and begin to jeer at him. Later, when Fred was older, his father would abruptly decide that his allowance was extra vagant--ademand - an itemized account of all Freds expenditures. Always, after he had reduced his child to helpless anger, Freds father would be overcome by conscience as suddenly as he had been mmediate nf overcome by jealousy. He would start praising him, telling Fred that he had only had his welftye in mind, that he had every confidence in his manliness pose a swimming pool and pro for the garden or an increase in Fred's allowance. Freds ambition was indeed Undermined but not by custom-mad- e bicycles. It was undermined by life with a father who was as incapable of consistent kindness as he was of consistent harshness. Fred, today, is an alcoholic. When we are unjust to a child, We arouse anger in him. When we suddenly explain the injustice we have done as love and kindness, we place him in a most difficult position. He has to reverse his judgment on injustice, choke back his anger and say to himself, How wrong I was. My parent is a noble soul. If he has to' say this to himself as often as Fred had to, he comes to distrust his intuition for all in justice and loses any respect for liis own ability to distinguish between aggressiveness and frlendll ness. Findings of a recent study by the University of Chicago show that consistent discipline is essential to childrens moral power. In an article in "Understanding the Child, published by the National Association of Mental Health, Dr, Robert J. Havighurst writes, "The child who has received consistent discipline, whether severe or light, is likely to have a good character.1 He has it because he has not been required to adjust to life with emotional chameleons who ask him to change his judgments so often that he ends up by not having any. We cannot replace a lost of self trust in a child by a swimming pool or an increased allowance. Such a point of view implies great on money. love and dependence Unless we recognize this, our at tempts to undermine his feeling that injustice has been done can become the root tl evil for everyone concerned. ' "Its that Los Angeles smog, he explained. "Theres so much haze over the city it isnt worthwhile to use a telescope. Other amateur astronomers are selling theirs, too. Milland let it be known he was interested in selling his telescope. An AEC man took it off his hands for "about half of its $1700 worth, he said. The actor added he was told the AEC now uses it for "tracking guided missiles. Milland used to store his heavy telescope in his garage, and rolled it out on wheels whei the luminary felt like inspecting the other variety in the heavens.
