One can only gather from his speeches that he thinks the high places of our government are filled by men who are not only incompetent but actually vicious. He may contemplate Russian policy with all the rever-env- e of a Communist Party card holder, if he chooses. But when he accuses Mr. Truman of courting war through aid to Greece and Turkey, when by indirection he accuses the Marshall plan of being a. prelude to conflict, that is some. thing else. Those insulting indictments are wholly unwarranted. And when he makes them, we believe that Mr. Wallace for-4- , feits his claim to speak for the "common man",: The Tru-r- ; man doctrine and the Marshall plan may not be perfect.. Their authors may be fallible. But to accuse those authors of de-berate warmongering is simply to parrot the ridiculous, dangerous output of Soviet propaganda, Mr, Wallare has appointed himself the sole guardian of the New Deal- - heritage and of Roosevelt liberalism. He ha3 clothed himrelf in brilliant trappings and attracted a con-- ! sidcrable following. He has given the impression that Mr. Roosevelt, were he alive today, would feel about Russia precisely as Mr. Wallace does. That is obviously a personal . assumption and nothing more. By his present line of talk, Mr. Wallace is not aiding the cause of peace. He is injuring it by creating the fiction abroad that he is the spokesman for a large block of Amer- ican opinion. Mr. Wallace is entitled to his own obsessions and opin-j- icin', and to the right to express them. But it would seem I hat the time has now come when his admirers have the right to question whether they are patterned after some which m e not only but ; , . ' I v It may be wondered whether Mr. Wallace would give any ' j edit for helping to divide the world in two parts to Mr. Molotov for walking out of the Paris conference. Per hups he thinks that the Russian foregn minister was cn-- i tiecd to Paris as part of a new imperialistic plot against the Bovict Union, and that he just managed to escape before the trap was sprung. Mr. Wallaces thinking may appear to waver and vary, but he does seem to swing to one consistant concrete line of thought. That is his apparent obsession with the idea that i I . , ; h (, j! j ;! I!
