Show FAULT AND THE QUAKE seismic trail followed by party from stanford university for fifteen miles city mo Y roop a chemist of this city has received interesting letter concerning the ef hect of the san francisco earthquake from his son wendell P roop a stu dent and assistant professor of phys cs at the stanford university palo alto the assistant anstr ictor w th a corps of students investigated the cause of the disaster in the vicinity of palo alto and followed the course of the earthquake for 15 miles mr roop ascribes the violent to a settling in the earth s surface and says that the tremors were par ticul arly violent in that locality be cause of a fault or weal spot in the earths crust there this fault ex tends along the biest of a mountain range for about 11 from sa linas to a point north of mount tamo lapas in his letter mr roop tells of fol lowing the earthquake s course where the ground was broken up in alternate ridges and depressions with an occa ional sink or cave in several feet in depth along hillsides landslides had occurred at frea lent intervals and lateral fissures marked the s of the ground for long distances un side |
