It draws only to a very limited extent upon essential metals and other materials, but provides employment for labor in its home setting and avoids dislocations incident to a heavier draft on the available skilled labor in nondefense areas, Mr. Champ stated. In the priorities field interest is being shown in an effort to define restrictions on home construction in terms of pounds of essential metals rather thnn in dollar value of the construction to be undertaken. Such a plan, asserted Mr. Champ, when pursued d in connection with a effort to conserve and salvage these materials might be much more flexible than the present SGOOO.CiO limit on new housing in defense areas, with mueh more drastic restriction in areas. "For example, it may be possible to reduce from two and one-hatons to a ton and a half, or even less, the amount cf metal required in the construction of a 46.000.00 home. The home building industry never has consumed more than 2 or 3ri of the potential steel production o tho country. Therefore, by ingenuity in housing the amount of metal needed to construct 525,00 houses, estimated to be required for decent housing of defense workers, would be a negligible fraction of tho present p.oduction of critical materials. Thus proper conservation and allocation of such materials should make possible the continuance of the building industry as the country's second largest industry without in any way hampering our defense effort. Referring to the rent control measures which are now under consideration, Mr. Champ expressed the opinion that rent control, while important in the control of inflation, should be undertaken with a full understanding of its For this attractive pattern, send economic consequences. 15o in coin, your name, address, pattern number and size to Serournal Todays Pattern vice, 149 New Montgomery SL, San ENTERTAINED The Richmond ward Trimary entertained the children at a Halloween pnrty on Wednesday at the tabernacle social hall.
