Show THE Horseback Ride To Peak Near Willard Proves Interesting To Group Funnel-Shape- d At the ' summit of the Willard Creek basin is a thrill. It reminds one of the terrace vineyards ill California and other places. These terraces were made several years ago by the Soil Conservation unit and the grasses have been allowed to reseed. The area is fenced and no grazing is allowed. The people of Willard became much interested in the project, bought the land from private land owners and deeded it to the government with the understanding that no grazing would be permitted. It was the only thing that would insure Willard against future floods down this treacherous canyon. At this elevatioh the wild flowers are at the peak of their bloom. For size, color and beauty they are gorgeous. Especially the pensta-ment- s. They range from light blue to deep dark purple. They are intermingled with the yellow blooms of the docks, the fragrant wail flower red roses and the white polomon-ium- s. Lovely lavender geraniums and small yellow blooms of the butter cup family are conspicuous. Nothing was more impressive than the graceful white columbines in the sade of the pines. Their leaves were green and clean. They were in groups as though nature had placed them in large vases. Cool Shade After the long climb the lunch at the cold spring fed by the ssiow drifts from Mt. Willard to the south, was enjoyed. At this elevation one was soon cool in the shade. This was the camp site for the Soil Conservation unit. After lunch the group went to the Mt. Willard Alpine lake and then ascended a winding trail to the Baddle back or ridge which separates the Willard Creek basin from the Great Salt Lake valley. On reaching the top of this ridge ones breath is taken momentarily when one beholds the Great Salt Lake valley spread over in all di- JULY MONDAY, PAGE THREE 1941. 14, Color Improves Architectural Lines of Home BENSON NEWS BY M. It For eleven mile south of Mantua reminds one of a beautiful meadow it is a gradual climb over a wind- on the side hill with all the wild ing trail to reach the headwaters of flowers in bloom. This alone was the Willard Creek at an elevation of more than 9000 feet. Members of the Logan Canyon Trails committee of the Logan chamber of commerce and the Cache Canter club took this ride Saturday. It proved to be one of the most interesting and thrilling of the entire schedule thus far. . Flod Rehabilitation After the last Willard flood several years ago, the soil conservation unit worked out a plan to rehabilitate this area with that above Farmington where they also had severe floods. If was necessary to build a one way auto road to get to the Willard Creek basin area. It was over this highway the horse back riders traveled Saturday. The horse trailers were left at the large flat about three miles south of Mantua. The trail winds up the main ridge that separates the south fork of the Box Elder creek and the north fork of the Ogden river. For a short distance the scrub oak trees and bushes were quite numerous. This is the north boundary for the oak. The area extends eastward to the headwaters of the south and east forks of the Little Bear river and in East canyon. There is some mahogany. As we ascend, all the country east with the high James peak in' the distant e, spreads out and makes a beautiful landscape. The more we- ascend, the larger and more massive is the landscape. An abandoned log cabin is noted here and there far below near some water hole. Finally the top of the ridge is reached that enters the headwaters of the north fork of the Ogden river basin. It Is a wonderful sight to see all the Little Ogden valley and parts of the Pine View dam from this position. A large curve to the north and west well up the mountain slope is made to keep out of the deep gulches hundreds of feet below. The trail winds around with a number of switch backs and extends southward to reach the east summit of the Willard Creek basin. To the north of the trail is the headwaters of the Perry Creek. A dam has been made to help store water for cattle. HERALD-JOURNA- Miss Nadine Ballard spent last gunday at Tooele. Don Stevenson of California was a Monday caller at the home of Bishop and Mrs. H.
