Instead, Romney said that his men picked up some valuable experience on the tour which should aid them immensely in the Big Seven chase. It was also brought out during the series of contests that no on one the Farmer main five has securely landed a position. Perhaps the most strenuous competition for starting honors is at the center post where Jack Mayne and Glen Maughan are still buttling it out. Mayne seems to have the upper edge on his more lanky teammate who often comes up with a showing of considerable merit. Trane Improves On the guard line Keith Trane is showing more and more his worth as a backcourt man which may eventually enable him to take over a regular guard post from either Austin Hughes or Nick Drakulich. Tranes fine floor play, defensive ability and scoring habitudes bid well for the former Lehi high school eager to extend either of the aforementioned duo. However, Hughes and Drakulich put in some good performances on their own to make things none to simple for Trane. Captain Roland Reading was high scorer for the Romneymen in each of the coast performances to still keep in the lead for one forward job. Evan Baugtq is working at the other, and Grant Cullimore, Ed Izatt and Johnny Putnick are hoping for a chance to displace the speedy and clever Baugh. HENRY TOD A YS 4 but not at a race track. Of s, Lo-ja- I al All-Sta- rs ALTA, Utah, Jan. 8 (UR) After more than five years of competition in the world's top ski tournaments, Dick Durrance hasn't a thing to show for it. All the medals, all the trophies, all the ribbons he won during those grueling years when he led the 1936 American Olympics ski team and a few years later took the national combined downhill and slalom title were destroyed by fire yesterday. The fire started from an overheated stove in the three-roocabin Durrance had built here when he turned professional and opened a ski school. Temperatures were so low that efforts to extinguish the fire were useless and the cabin was levelled. Damage to the building and its contents including all the clothing end furniture of Mr. and Mrs. Durrance was estimated at $5,000. Durrance said he wasn't bothered as much by the financial loss as he was by the destruction of his skiing morr.entos. m OREGON WINS CORVALLIS, Ore., Jan. 8 C.R) Oregon State college opened defense of its northern division Pacific Coast conference basket9 ball title last night with a over Washington State. victory With the score tied at 39 all and three minutes to go George McNutt, Pasadena, Caiif., transfer slipped in for a basket to put Oregon State out in front.
