Knudsen, production chief of the rational defense council, to prevent new British orders for about 1,200 American airplanes from interfering with production for this country's tkfrnse program, the United Press learned today. The request for coordination of the British orders with this country's demands was made by army air corps officials who feared the new orders might tie up production channels. It was the first time such a request has been taken directly to the defense council. KnudsPn s associates said he expressed willingness to undertake coordination of the orders and he believed no serious difficulties would be encountered. The British order was issued by Arthur B. Pruvis, chief of the British purchasing commission, and sent to American authorities who must approve the release of war supplies to belligerent powers. Detailed cost estimates and a breakdown of types of planes were not disclosed. A ROUND-U- P PRICES TO THRILL YOU! (By Wireless) and organization the German military machine has those two vital components of conquest in amazing quantity. I stood on the Bordeaux waterfront July 1 for two and a half hours and watched General von Kleist review "panzer divisions in their new headquarters more than 600 miles from the Fatherland. I counted roughly 2500 motorized units, carrying 15,000 soldiers completely armed for battle. The reviewing group nf German officers was the only part of that mighty host which was afoot. Along the quays before a very few natives of Bordeaux purred every type of motorized equipment needed for the stern pursuit of war, including heavy guns, artillery, machine guns and light mortars, followed by rifle squads, radio cars, motorcyclists, commissary wagons and pontoon bridge squads, complete with motorbouts and heavy bridge sections. of all were Most impressive armored heavy huge tanks streamlined to deflect shells. For drab, sullen military power this parade eclipsed anything seen in modern warfare. It was organized in the short space of a day and a half after the Germans officially took over Bordeaux. For a week after Paris fell, the French army streamed through Bordeaux afoot, on cycles, in motor lorries. The poilus slept in the fields and in barns on the roadfor bread, side. They foraged vegetables and tinned meat and ate their meals with red wine at cafes, stopping sometimes an hour, an afternoon, a day or longer. Along the highways, which led to the country, metal flags planted at the lanes indicated the various Nazi "regimental headquarters. Dispatch riders on motorcycles dodged in and out and armored cars dropped off loads of the occupying forces. Commissary officers were busy buying food at the stores, paying in neighborhood new marks. f By nightfall, the Germans were completely installed. It was their turn to sing. Stirring college songs and beer hall chants rose from the wooded hollows after supper and until midnight, when three lusty Sieg Heils ended the serenade. Then in silence Bordeaux began its first Sunday in history under control of a German army. J. V. CELEBRATION PROVIDENCE, JULY 23, 24, 25, 26, 27 50 Rib knit ecru color. To the present time Hitler has been consistently successful in making good his promises of acBut it is always complishment. advisable to develop caution as ones succession of fortunate pre- dictions lengthens. Hitler apparently is counting on a gigantic air attack against Britain as his first major move in his offensive. He may use some 5.000 planes in a succession of wave bombings. This probably his extreme limit, considering the large home and conquered areas that must be protected and the necessity of holding reserves. In the last month it has been estimated an average of 100 German planes have been attacking Great Britain daily. That is a total of 8,000 planes, and less than 400 persons have been killed. Destruction of property is a military secret, but there is no evidence it can have been in any way crippling when the number of casualties is so small. Indeed, the British government recently countermanded orders precious that factory workers must seek air raid shelters at the first alarm. They now continue working until the final alarm because it has been demonstrated most bombs land in fields or yards or other places where they do little harm. Nor is there any apparent indication that a German invading army is certain to land on British soil in sufficient strength to conquer the country. Even if Hitler has secret weapons and unknown ways of transport, the fact they have not been previously tried must show an element of uncertainty in them. It is impossible to have complete confidence in their automatic success such as Hitler seems to display. The third means of subduing Great Britain is by a starvation blockade if air attacks and an in- -' vasion fail. German air and submarine operations have accounted for considerable destruction of British shipping during the last 10 months, but not sufficient to give an absolute guarantee of fin al success. The British government announced this week that for every ship sunk, nearly seven hundred reach British safely ports. $0) 1 FANCY BLANKETS CHILDRENS ANKLETS ...rf, ff without an;- - demur.
