| Show six men meet death in a at the mining camp of alta awful avalanche came down upon the men as they were sleeping sweeping away the houses and burying the victims beneath twenty ave feet of snow sandy utah after many hours ot frantic toll on the part of a large band of alta miners the bodies of the six victims who suffered death in the aw fua at the camp saturday morning were uncovered and sunday afternoon brought to sandy where they lie in the city hall awaiting fu j aeral arrangements by friends and relatives ela tives following are the jamesj ages and so far as has been ascer tamed the places of residences of the dead bennett albert aged 26 came from santaquin San utah history un known claybourne george aged 30 mother resides in salt lake brick on john aged 26 riverton salt ake count gray john aged 55 tranger from california erry aged 45 miner park city owell william aged 18 sandy boarding house keeper powell was in charge ol 01 the board ing hauae conducted in the camp by mrs john cateon of sandy his mother gray was a miner empio ed by the columbus consolidated mining company the remaining victims were strangers who had come to tha camp seeking work in the dead of night while all the victims were atleed the avalanche rushed down the mountain side with out a warning sweeping away the boarding house referred to and the saloon of ross armburst Orm burst the building gray and mur phy in the saloon the other victims were in their bunks at the boarding house armburst the proprietor of the sa loon lee herrick and john baker were sleeping la that portion of the baloon which escaped the heaviest portion of the stifle and by some break of chance they escaped death altho agh they were hurled in from three to six feet of snow armburst feho says that when he was awakened ie found himself out of his bed and entombed in a drift was the first to recover himself although clad in nothing but his shirt without even a pair 01 as protection from the icy armburst Arm burgt probed the snow un til he found lee and baker who though burled were still alive an I 1 them in digging their way put then these three brave men mth only their night garments to pro hect them from the storm which a that hour 2 clock saturday morn ing was raging fiercely worked foi hours in an effort to locate the other victims all suffered greatly and bakers feet were badly frozen although the slide which came from the rueter hill on the side of the canyon had traveled near ly half a mile before finding its vie tims it seemed to spend its force at the point where the buildings were strack as the avalanche did not go farther across the flat the rescuing force began work at 7 clock and shortly before noon saturday the last victim had been uncovered the bodies being burled from ten to twenty five feet in the hard packed snow |
