Show riaiif THE TAGE TWO. The Bell. 1878. LET US HAVE MORE RABBLE-ROUSIN- G t deal of deploring is going on in some newspapers A GOOD and magazines about the recent arms racket investi- gation by a senatorial committee in Washington. It seems the probe wasn't dignified, and that some South American nations got considerably wrougnt up because some of their officials were discovered to be cheap grafters. One deploring editorial speaks of the investigating senaYou are supposed to be part of the tors as "rabble and it is thought to be wrong to demonstrate to you that, in the eyes of diplomats and munitions manufacturers, you are merely the raw material that fights and dies for their profit. But youre not supposed to know about this; anyone who demonstrates it is a "demagog. Well, this newspaper thinks the investigation served a very useful purpose, and that it ought to be continued as soon as possible. Let us know the names and addresses of ample, all over the world, who stir up wars for profit. Maybe we havent reached the stage yet where we can punish such people, but at least they can be shown what t every decent man and woman thjnkS of them. After the investigation is ever, let us alsilish, once and for all, the system that allows private profit out of a public war. Let us institute, instead, a system of government mon, opoly of all war material. That will take the profit motive out of it and remove, at one sweep, the most potent of warmaking incentives. If making w'ar material is the business of everyone, without profit and only a huge expense all of us are going to think twice before plunging into a ' conflict. All of childhood's pesky ways have been dolled up with long names in the past few years. Twenty years ago, if a kid stuck out his tongue and said : I wont he got called a hellcat and dipped on the ear. It turns out that was all wrong. He was merely suffering subnormal tendencies and should have been hustled off to a t. Youve no idea how the poor kids suffer. Suppose Junior wont eat his lovely mush (ugh!) for breakfast. Dont mash his ear with a spoon, or tell him he. wont be a big strong man unless he downs the awful stuff. What hes suffering from is acute raushophobia, due to being frightened by a plate of spinach in infancy. Wipe off his chin at once and take him around to a psychiatrist to have his complexes excavated. In our day, if a child was caught playing with the on the Ispahan rug, he got Ming vases or making mud-pispanked in the right place and sent to bed without supper. It usually cured the little tike, too. Nowadays, if a child so much points it isnt rude to point any more, either! at Lite rare Venetian bowl Aunt Delia brought back from Paterson, N, J. four years ago, youre supposed to hand it to him right away, lest his destructive animal magnetism be thwarted and his life ruined.
