Kviryone was happy. Monday night, Mr. and Mrs. visited Mr. and Mrs, Helgesen Woolf. The two painters, as was their custom, went out for a walk, filling their lungs with clean, pure air, so necessary after working all day in the metallic fumes of lead paint. Before they returned, little Colleen, the sweet little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Helgesen, began to fret. It was her bedhusband and So, leaving time. father behind, they returned to He did not go to bed immediately. Something kept him wide awake. He was not feeling well. He decided to take another walk in an effort to induce sleep. He went into the bedroom and kissed Gudrun. It was the last time she saw him alive. A moment 11:10 later, at approximately p. m she heard him close the door as he left the house. Twenty-fiv- e minutes later he lay dead on a sidewalk a few blocks from his temporary home. A bullet had pierced his skull. Blood was oozing from the wound, forming a pool around his mashed and battered head. He had been innocently shot and instantly killed by a bullet from a gun in the nervous hands of Grant Powell, a night watchman. LOOKED I MONSEN i MEAT MARKET i MX K)K -- Powell and Jesse Jackson, a deputy sheriff, had been seeking a "rather short, dark complex-ione- d man dressed in white corduroys, a dark coat and a medium dark hat." Allegedly the man had presented himself obscenely to two St. Anthony girls. They had run to the home of Jackson for aid. They said the man exposed himself indecently. He accosted them on the street and asked for a cigarette. With one hand and a he hid the white handkerchief lower part of his face. Later that night on two blocks of the mam section of the city stood seven men attired in light trousers and dark coats. Six of them wore medium dark hats. KILLKit SILENT The next day the inquest was held. Powell refused to testify on the grounds it might incriminate him. Jackson told the story of the girls coming to his house and how he went after his car, picked up Powell and started cruising the streets. Neither was in uniform. Down a side street, a short block from the main business street, they saw a man walking along the sidewalk. He wore light trousers, a dark coat and a rather light hat. It was Harold Helgesen taking a walk to induce sleep. They pulled in to the curb. Helgesen started towards them. Suddenly as he neared the car. he grabbed his hat, dodged behind the machine and started on a mad dash down the street. While Powell started after him, Jackson went around the block in the car to head him off. Shots were heard. HE KNOWS SECRET the When Jackson completed circuit of the block, he found Harold Helgesen dead upon the sidewalk. With a smoking gun in his hand, Powell stood beside the prostrate form. A pool of blood was forming. What happened during these few minutes only Powell knows. He refuses to talk. Quiet tongues, like dead men, tell no tales. Not even he knows what caused Harold Helgesen to run so unexpectedly. Possibly he thought it was a holdup. Possibly he suddenly became panicky when accosted by two men with a gun. That is one secret he carries to the grave. At the inquest the two girls were uncertain as to the identity of the man. His hat and another were placed on a table. They chose the wrong hat. They picked out a rather small man in the audience as being the approximate height of their assailant. Harold Helgesen was several inches taller than that man. CONTINUES ON BEAT As they stood near the dead man, witnesses heard one of the girls say softly, I guess we got the wrong man. After the brutal killing, Powell continued on his beat all night. The next night, he was still on it. Early in the evening, a car pulled up to the curb near him. In it were four women. One of them was Gudrun Helgesen. He walked over to the curb. "Did you want to talk to me?" "No, we just want to see your face. We don't want to forget you." Later that evening, city officials, headed by Mayor Gilbert Orme, called on the young widow. The extreme financial distress of the city was explained. The sudden and tragic death of Harold Helgesen was also discussed. Finally, they made an offer of $200 for release of any claim on the city. They were bartering on the value of a dead man. Gudrun Helgesen looked at them questioningly with wide blue eyes. Suppose a dog had been killed. Would they offer the owner $200 and tell him to get out of town? Then they asked her to sign a release for the body. This she also refused. It was only through the goodwill of Otto Oskar and A. Wendenes, friends of the family in Logan, and modern Good Samaritans who paid the undertaker, that the body could be removed. TOWN DIVIDED Most of this, Gudrun Helgesen told me Thursday morning in the little sitting room of the Thorny home in St. Anthony. Other facts were obtained in conversations with numerous people of the town. Opinion is divided on the case. However, the people seemingly agree on two points, that the wrong man was killed and that Powell was a little too hasty on the trigger. The town is divided Into two distinct factions. One, headed by L. D. S. church officials and other law abiding citizens, prominent is for strict enforcement of the law and a moral clean up of the town. The other faction, more easy going, believes the town will take care of itself. The city council is divided two to three in favor of the latter group. Consequently, the town Is wide open. Slot machines, always one of the first " town, are signs of a lined up three and four deep everywhere. Open card games are in progress. It is also said that a pint is as easy to get as a drink of soda water. The council is reported to stand three against two in support of Officer Powell. TIME MAY HEAL WOUND And so, while Gudrun Helgesen sits in her rocker, dry eyed and silent, neither eating nor sleeping, her man goes to his grave, a victim of an unfortunate mistake of American justice. Ha is gone. A baby, born in the old country, preceded him in death. Only little Colleen, born In Logan February 12, 1930, is left to carry on with Gudrun Helgesen. Colleen speaks better English than her mother sometimes acts as in- 2. 1 9 3 OFFER 1 LOGAN FRIDAY, APRIL 29, UTAH, Creamery poimd21c L DEVILED MEATS .Lr. 25c SUGAR $1 .29 r:nd. ,1 25c .. 25c PRUNES!
