A Cornell university 2 5, 5J C?V A decade ago the shop that had a dozen or so different shades of hats in stock had just about covered the entire gamut of color variety that the market afforded. Today three times that number would not be considered a comprehensive display of the fashion's demands. The reason is that the designers of men's hats have gone far beyond the confines of primary colors and the smartest dyers have developed very rich that provide great-e- r latitude for attaining match-in- g or blending effects with the suits, topcoats and other outman's standing units in a grooming. Today you can go into the alert hat shop and find a dozen tones of blues, or of greys, or tans or browns or greens to say nothing of the pastel shades. In fact today the keen dresser leans toward the softer effects m taste and jauntiness and the Homburg shape . for the more conservative dresser. A noted feature of these Homburg hats is that brims are very precisely set and welt or curled edges have almost entirely eclipsed the bound edge style. Derbies, of which many will be worn during the early fall with the dressier topcoats, show slight change in proportions of crown to brim. They are a little less flat-stending toward a sharper turn to the brim and a flatter crown. Debies in grey are struggling hard for recognition. Soft Hats Are Popular Soft hats are still the finishes and even during overcoat days less of the beaver and velour hats will be shown this winter than in years previously. The fact that pile cloths for overcoats is on the wane is expected to retard the sale of velour hats and while there will be many of the lighter fleeced fabrics shown in overcoats the more fastidious dressers seem to prefer the smooth felts to the beaver finishes even though beavers finisher blend so beautifleeced overcoats fully with babrics. In Europe there is an evidence of the return of the cloth hat of tourist shape made from patterned tweeds and cheviots but the trend shows no .indication of having come across the Atlantic. Police say that on an average of less than a dozen men apply for free shelter at the present time. When business is good, during the cold months, as high as 60 men have applied for a night's lodging. Most of the transients .are sleeping in vacant buildings on the outskirts of town, or are "flopping" under trees. The warm weather has caused the change. The tramps who sleep in the jail are required to sign a register with their names and address. Balloon Models Vanish While other lasts will have their following there will not be the great variety as heretofore- The jazz models of other years are practically gone. The balloon type of footwear will be rarely seen. It remains merely a reminder of the post-wdays. It is the sort of last that becomes most men, particularly since there is suificient variation, running from a slightly blunted toe to a well pointed toe.
