Show r THE DAILY HERALD AND THE JOURNAL WEDNESDAY. AUGUST n imt ivu 5,1931. SUMNER HALE TO LEAVE LOGAN THIS FALL Outstanding Leader Of Boys Quits Job BY JACK CHRISTIANSEN Sumner Hale, coach at the Logan junior high school for the ptot lour years, has resigned his f and will leave in September for Michigan university where he will continue his schooling in playground supervision. He will also work part time under the direction of Ur. Elmer Mitchel, a member of the U. S. A. C. summer school session statf. Mr. Hale will he a member of the part time staff and will give instructions in various sports, as well as being an official for games. In l he past four years at Logan Junior high, Sumner has been a remarkably successful coach, having won three junior high basketball championships out of a possible four. He has staited ninny boys out on the right track in their alhietic careers as may be evidenced by Hie fact that the ma;ority of the Logan senior lngb athletes in the last several years had their first athletic schooling under Hale. ALL OF WJRK OUTSTANDING In track work, it was Hale who first took a team to the B. Y. U. relays and made a good showing, finishing well near the top among other junior schools of the state and only this year the tracksters were successful in winning the first northern division track and field meet and again made a good showing at the Provo ltelay Carnival. To climax a successful season, Ifelmer Miller, a prodigy of Hale won first place in the state junior Olympic competition at Salt Lake City. Not only has Sumner coached winning teams but . he has been the means of getting the boys interested in sports and has developed athletics to a point where they have been highly instrumental in keeping the boys interested in their schooling. MUCH OTHER WORK S ACCOMPLISHED His work at ihe junior liigb school is only one of his many s contributions to the welfare of in Logan. He has coached the Seventh ward M men basketball team for four years, the junior American Legion baseball team for three years and has been a member of the Logan Collegians baseball nine for three years, managing the team for two. Although hard luck camped on lus trail as a coach of the Seventh ward team, it is undoubtedly orib of the highlights of his coaching career. In his first year the Seventh warders won the Logan stake championship and the northern district championship to enter the state M. I. A. tourney where they lost to Provo in a heartbreaking; final game. In 1928-2they duplicated their performance of the year before and lost to West Jot dan in state competition. In the following year, they again entered the state tourney, losing to Lincoln who later won the championship. A year ago, the Seventh warders lost a first round game and were eliminated in the second round of state competition. Junior baseball has been going in Cache valley for three years and for the last two years Sumner Hale has coached a winner. A year ago they lost a tough one to Vico Oil who later won the state Junior baseball championship. C. and was undoubtedly kept from a fine ath- letic record at that school due to the fact that ne was consider-erea prof' sstonal following his coaching at Malad. The following year he coached at Cakley, Idaho, where he was again successful in tuming out winning teams. The above are omy a very few of the many achievements of Sunnier Hale. He has worked for the welfare of the community as a whole. He has established solidly in the minds ot the younger boys of Logan that first and foremost in successful career ol an athletic must come sportsmanship. He has worked wonders with the boys of Logan City during the past four years and has proven a worthy exampm for them to follow. The well wishes of the entire community go with Mr. Hale, his wilo and little daughter In their work at Michigan university and afterward as well. d Phone t, NAME THEY STAND CITY I 1 HERALD-JOURNA- L l) romped-tio- Vernon has been in Washington, past few years and entry was a we time one, it occasioned no Ml tie amount of suiprire. Clinton started the fire woiks in their half of the first inning when Bonham scored on a s'ngle by Cook. The Collegians were not content to bring up the rear and in the last half of the same inning chased two runs across tile platter due to some good hitting, on the part of Neilsen, McDonald and Sorenson. The locals scored one run each in the sixth and seventh innings, while Clinton scored two in the seventh. The Collegians appeared to be certain of victory but ball games are never over until the last man is out and Clinton smacked Pete Evans who had relieved Jesse Dailey for four hits and one run, to tie the count in the last half of the ninth. in Both teams went scorless the tenth and darkness Dually intervened. Cook, Clinton first baseman, proved a sensation witn his timely hitting. This powerful chap connected for four safe hits out of a possible four giving him a pel feet day at bat. Miller was next best hitter while Flash Neilsen was the Collegians best bet with five trips to the plate and three hits to his credit. (Lit) That once popular ditty which, among other things, asked the homely question, How Y'ou Gonna Keep Em Down on the Farm? has been revived and is being sung lustily these days by no less than seven of the eight National league owners. The chorus reached a crescendo (or was it a fortissimo) a few weeks ago when it became apparent that nothing short of flood, fire or pestilence was going to keep the St. Louis Cardinals out of their fourth National league pennant in the last six years. Of course, to gain the full benefit of this discourse you must remember that the Cards are, and have been for the last five years, just a collection of And when we say farm hands we mean graduates of those various minor league clubs the St. Louis outfit has scattered here and there over the landscape. Just how well this farm system works is shown by the highly manner in which the Cards, despite more hard luck than any other team, have functioned this season. At one time or' another during the 1931 chase Manager Gabby Street has had to use substitutes for such regulars' as Frisch, 'Gel-berWatkins, Adams, Wilson, Baines, and Martin. Yet the St. Louisans are way out there in tront, and will be when its all ' over. There can he but one answer: The steady flow of high class reserve material from the farms The Caids have worked the thing out so well that Manager Street can order a spare part for his machine just as easily as you and I can order a can of tomatoes from the corner grocer. This fact was never more clearly proved than when the Cards calmly tossed off Taylor Douthit, one of the games really great outfielders, and replaced him with a young man by the name of Pepper Martin. Pepper already has displayed enough class to make St. Louis fans forget the polished Douthit. . HERALD-JOURNA- .
